I am turning 50 this year. I am orig from Canada but now live in Arizona. In Canada, back in 1990, when I was 30, I went back to college to better myself so I could get better job prospects. I went back to Northern College and on our Frosh Week, the first week, one of the guys in the class set us up to go to the golf course and have a Golf Fun Day. Ok sounds like fun. Went there and he gave us some basic instructions. I remember standing on that tee box, swinging numerous times and thinking, "How hard can it be to hit this tiny ball?" By the time we got to the 3rd hole, it was cold and it started snowing, our balls were getting lost in the snow; someone had to go Canadian Tire and get neon coloured golf balls. Bottom line We voted to go to the clubhouse and drink...and I thought to myself "Golf is not for me.... ever again!!" lol Years later, in 2000, I met my future hubby in a yahoo chatroom, flew down to Arizona to meet him, went back home, gave my notices at work and started a new adventure in life. We married 6 months later in Vegas. The next 4 years we were missing something in life and didn't know what it was. Richard then discovered golf. I was far from thrilled but he was so excited about this new game. We started going out to this desert golf course in Salome, AZ every weekend. My heart wasn't in it but I did try to hit some shots. One time we were on the 7th hole, it was 145 yards. I thought to myself "I'm going to try to do like those girls do on TV; bend the knee, swing back, turn, and whatever else" I struck the ball just perfect. It landed 3 ft from the hole and I was instantly struck with golf fever! From Oct 2004 to May 2005 we drove an hour away & played every weekend at that Greasewood Desert Golf Course. Then in May 2005, I begged Richard to go to Emerald Canyon Golf Course in Parker and he said we would just embarrass ourselves but I spoke to Mary in the Pro Shop and she said we could do the Back 9 Early Bird special. I remembered when I had to hit my first shot on the fairway, it was like hitting it off a plush carpet. To this day I still don't like taking divots! So now we were golfing here at a beautiful golf course 5 mins away from home. In December 2005, I joined the Ladies League and established a handicap. It was a 48L so basically I was green as green could be. I worked hard at my game and practiced whenever I could. Richard and I watched the Golf Channel constantly and we read Golf Digest to pick up new hints and tried new swings to help better our game. In December 2006 my handicap went down to 38. I worked all spring & summer and in December 2007, I won the Most Improved Golfer by bringing my handicap down, in one year, from 38 to a 17. After a couple weeks, I felt my game wasn't going to get any better and I was getting frustrated. I was thinking about quitting. Next month, in January 2008, I was playing golf with my hubby, and on Hole #8 he was teeing off. I was to his left about 60 yards at the beverage cart. He hit his ball so hard, it hooked and it was coming straight towards us. I saw the ball coming towards me and thought "If I shift left, I might move into it" That was my last thought. I just stopped, closed my eyes and BAM! The ball hit me right in the Right Knee cap. I was white as a ghost lol We were supposed to go to Torrey Pines that day to watch Lefty and I was determined to go but that didn't happen. I went to the hospital instead. I had a broken kneecap and was confined to a full leg brace for almost 2 1/2 months. It was during these months that I realized that I missed the game of golf and I needed to get back as soon as possible. After 2 1/2 months, I asked the doctor if I could get a smaller knee brace. He said it was fine as long as I felt strong enough. I went out occasionally to hit a couple balls with the driver to satisfy my "craving". I played in the Club Championship, which was end of March 2008 and I still had my brace on. I hobbled my way through it. I was just happy to be playing again. Spring and summer went by and the new season started in Oct 2008. I was getting stronger and stronger and ready to play. In Nov, I played the first 2 tournaments and just concentrated on accuracy. I didnt do great. In January 2009, I started using Titleist Pro-V1's and I played the 3 day State Medallion tournament. (once a week each Wed) I won this tournament. So I got to represent the Club at the State in December 2009. In March 2009, I played the Club Championship. This was a 3 day tournament (each Wed for 3 weeks) I was playing my Pro-V1s again. This year, I won the Club Championship! I was so thrilled. That was a memorable day! Also on that day, I tied the Ladies Course record of 76 (with Sarah Gilliland), I got Closest to the Pin on Hole #5 at 5ft 2inch and I also qualified to play in the Dirty Dozen Ladies Tournament with a net of 57. Every Wednesday Ladies Day or Pro Am I play Pro V1's and I do very well with them. They (usually) go exactly where I want them to go and they land softly on the greens and hold pretty good. I played the Pro V1x and I hit this ball about 10 yards further than I did the ProV1 so I play either or. I even have the ProV1 ball that I won the Club Championship in 2009! (I can get a pic) If I were to win, I think I would only accept a min $$ amount, some in script and then I would want to donate the remainder to a charity or some Junior Golf Program. I know this was long...just thought someone had time to read this...lol Have a great day!!
