Is it the wrong ball?

I've been working hard on my swing to bring my handicap down to an 8. Lately, however, I'm starting to wonder if my improved swing has made my current Pro V1x the wrong ball. The deal is that my ball flight is now higher than ever. Even the driver goes a mile high. It still carries 280+, but I get about a foot of roll. Irons are the same deal. My woods are 910D3 (dialed down to 8.75°) and a 15° 910Fd. The problem with such a high ball is that my home course has REALLY narrow fairways plus wind off the ocean -- not a good combo for a high ball.

When I go the range, the ball flight is not nearly as high, and I often hit the balls past the range boundaries. I know the Pro V1x claims a higher ball flight, but is that even for drivers and long irons? I changed to the Pro V1x because the Pro V1 was spinning too much for me.

First of all, the pro v1x is supposed to go higher of the tee. I like to use the pro v1 because of the soft feel and exceptional distance but if you don't like too much spin you should try the new

If you haven't already been fit, one solution would be to check out the shafts you have on your clubs and maybe get fit for ones that kick lower for a lower trajectory. My only advice for the driver would be to tee it lower and another more drastic measure would be to find a ball that maybe isn't a Titleist (GASP!) Atleast you don't hit you shots low like I tend to. :P

Hope this helps, and best of luck to you.

What are the main differences between the 2 pro v balls. I'm a 3 handicapper and have been playing the Pro V1 for years. Never really gave the V1x much thought. I hit my tee shots with a mid to high flight. Same with my low to mid irons. My long irons are more of a mid flight. I hit about 60-60% of my fairways and 65-70% of my greens.

The proV1 spins a little more than the proV1x because its a little softer.  The advantage of this is that you will be able to work the ball easier if you desire, but the disadvantage is that it won't fly quite as straight.  As far has height goes I don't think there will be a big difference between the 2 balls, but I think the proV1 would go higher if anything.

Maybe try the NXT tour s

I was fitted for all my clubs. The driver is a 910D3 with an X Diamana shaft. I will give the Pro V1 a try and see what happens. I've hit the NXT Tour in the past, but I prefer the extra control the ProV1's get me.

Apparently your new swing is the problem.

When you make a change that doesn't, then unchange it, don't expect equipment changes to fix it.

The new swing may have changed things, but there is a difference when I use the range balls. At the range, my ball flight is much lower. I'm trying the prov1 on Tues.

I have used V1, and V1x  this year.  I think the v1x does launch a bit higher off the driver, and gives me 5 yards more distance.  However I like the extra spin and softer feel of the v1, and the workability.

dude - if 90% of the tour pros around the world are using the ProV1X there is absolutely nothing wrong with that ball, plain and simple.  Same for the ProV1.

If you are hitting your driver too high, either your angle of attack is too steep, too much from the outside, or the shaft/loft/or lie is not right for your swing.

    Good luck

I agree with JPHB.  You may have to change your ball position or driver loft.   The ProV1 and ProV1x's are outstanding.   I have Titleist drivers from 8.5- 10.5 degrees.  Testing the new ProV1x, the 9.5 got the flight I was looking for.  The 10.5 was a bit too high for my liking.

    Good Luck, keep us posted.

Your issue seems to be your driver loft. You should lower the loft on the club. BTW what course are you playing at

the prov1x is still the best for you. the problem may be involved in your swing and not as much the ball. try moving the ball back in your stance and don't try to scoop the ball as much,

My home course is Widows Walk in Scituate, MA. There are narrow fairways with trouble on both sides on every hole, and every green has big trouble on at least three sides. Wind and a high ball do not mix there.

I'm 6'5" tall. All of my clubs were professionally fitted by an advanced Titleist fitter. My driver spin was 2537rpm, launch was 11 degrees, and swing speed was 116mph. Supposedly, this is pretty close to optimal. However, I take that same swing to the ProV1x, and I get a really high ball.

I've taken many films. I don't think I'm scooping. I will try moving the ball back, but that sometimes makes the ball actually go higher due to more spin.

I have some work to do once the weather warms up a little.

It sounds like you may be getting a little steep at impact (as suggested in an earlier thread).  If you are moving the ball back in your stance and are still struggling to keep the ball down, then you may have a tendency to get too steep - especially if this is also happening in your driver swing.

Too many swing thoughts can be a terrible thing, but when I find myself getting steep, I make sure that I am swinging through the ball.  Every once in a while, I will struggle with basically hitting at the ball instead of letting the ball get in the way of my swing.

    Good luck!

tell me is your grip really strong. Sometimes this can cause the driver to have a very high angle at impact.

I have to agree with Daniel, grip is important. Just last year my boyfriend fitted me with Titleist clubs (he works for Titleist)  and has been giving me lessons.  One of the simplest and effective changes we made was my grip.  He had me loosen it a bit.  Saw an immediate difference.

I think the short answer to your problem is, MAYBE, yes. If you try the pro v1 and it doesn't work out , bstone makes a wonderful product as well. I play in Wyoming and the wind blows in excess of 30 MPH 300 days a year.  I know what you mean and have struggled with the same thing in the past. Mile high rocket balls in a gale is never a good thing. To keep the ball down in 40+MPH wind, I tend to address the ball Less than an inch further back than normal and attack it on a more "sweeping" plane. I also tee my ball Slightly lower. If you were casually looking at my method. you may not even notice any of these changes, but the results are dramatic. I hope some of this helps. I love Titleist equipment. Most all of my gear is titleist. But if I chance upon something that fit my game and conditions better, I will all the way rock that. If changing to pro v1 is your fix, great. If you need to change your approach on windy days, and that works, so be it. But, if none of that works, Keep and open mind, and remember that Titleist is not the only game in town, and it is HARD to find a BAD golf ball from a reputable company now a days.  With the reputation Titleist has, I would think they would want you playing their ball because it is the right ball for YOU.  Not because they have all these fan boys on their band wagon.

Thanks, Jeff. I will try your suggestions.

BTW, I've tried several other balls, but I always end up back with Titleist. What I need to do is try several different ones on the same day and see what happens. Part of the problem with this is that my main course is public, so it's hard to practice the same shot multiple times without holding up the group behind.

I look forward to my usual high draw shot coming down a little lower.

Good luck, buddy. Titleist makes some of the BEST products on the market, and I love the fact that they don't just repackage and try to tell you it is new and improved. They seem to constantly move forward, but I do miss some of the old product lines. Hope you find a good solution.

They sure do. My bag has been mostly Titleist since 1991, and as of last year every club is a Titleist. I've demoed others, but I never found anything to take me away. Sometimes, it simply comes down to I like the look and feel. I'm sticking with my 910MBs, 910 woods, and SC putter.

Once the snow clears a bit up here, I plan on getting the video camera out again. If I can get the swing back to relative form, I will see if I can get in front of a Trackman to see what the hell I'm doing. Even though I score well (My index is 5.5), I think lowering my ball flight will help improve things. Too often I see that high ball get pushed around by the wind.
