Trevor - if you haven't already, take a look at the Ball Fitting page: http://www.titleist.com/golf-ball-fitting/ and especially the section:  Golf Ball Distance Differences are Small (see below) .  Regardless of a player's swing speeds, the distance differences between Titleist golf balls is just not game changing.  However, if you really like the feel of the Pro V1 that will likely lead to better performance for you around the green and better scoring.  My guess is that you should stick with Pro V1.  

This FAQ is also helpful in better what's more important:  longer distance or hitting more GIR's.

What will help me lower my scores most - longer distance or hitting more greens in regulation?

Hitting more greens in regulation is game changing, and continuing to develop a more consistent short game will provide golfers with the best opportunity to lower their scores. All Titleist golf balls are long at all swing speeds. Differences between models off the driver for swing speeds ranging from tour players (near 110 mph) down to lower speed players (in the 80s mph) are less than 4 yards - and that distance is not game changing or score changing. Game changing distance is potentially obtainable through physical fitness, swing improvements and club fitting.

I think a first great step would be to take a sleeve of each out to the course and conduct a side-by-side on-course evaluation. This way you can see how the Pro V1 and Pro V1x perform for you as you work through different shots with each golf ball model.

With our fitting methodology, we start fitting players by having them hit partial swing iron shots into and around the green, then followed by full swing iron shots, and finally hitting from the tee with the driver. As you go through the fitting process, take note of which golf ball is performing best for your game on each of the different shots. This process can be conducted during a normal round of play, by tracking fairways hit, greens hit in regulation and proximity to hole on approach shots. Another option is to play one model golf ball for nine holes and do the same with the secondary recommendation on the back nine. Additionally, feel preference is a part of the on course evaluation process as it relates to confidence in shot making ability. 

In case you are curious, we use the same fitting approach with amateurs and professionals out on tour.

This methodology determines the highest performing ball for a golfer’s total game, not on just one shot. At the end of the day, it's about lowering scores and I personally found the fitting process to be a lot of fun. Let us know how it works out for you.

Im not concerned with "Bombing it" if  you will.  Im curious if the ProV1x will spin less thus slightly more accurate with the irons?  Will that give a tad more distance?

Im most concerned with the approach shots both long and short.  Will the ProV1x provide more control over the ProV1?  

Where Can I buy just a sleeve.  All my local Golf shops just sell by the Dozen ( Golfers Warehouse, Edwin Watts, Dicks sporting goods ECT.)

In terms of distance, as Liz mentioned above, all Titleist golf balls are long and distance differences between models is just 4 to 5 yards.

If you're looking to buy a sleeve I would check around your local courses again as many will sell individual sleeves. You can also ask the shops to see if they have any individual sleeves for sale behind the counter. Hope this helps!

If you are a 3 and have been playing the Pro V1 - keep playing the Pro V1 - it is obviously working for you.  Don't worry, the Pro V1 is long, look at the average driving distance of three prominent Pro V1 users, Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Gary Woodland - these guys are bombing it out there and scoring very well with this ball, and apparently so are you!

Hey guys, I am 12 and a decent playing shooting in low to mid 50's for 9 holes (last year, havent got out there yet in 2011) What would help my game more? I am fully committed and want to be bettter.

if you still shoot mid lo 50s i would use nxt tour. thats what i used to use because theyre soft and really nice golf balls. Also, theyre not 14$ a sleeve so you wont feel bad when losing one.

Trevor,   I am a 4.8 hcp index player (SS 104) and have switched between the pro V1 & pro V1x  a couple of times. I seem to hit the pro v1 x slightly futher, although the added distance gain isn't sufficient enough for me stay with. I prefer the added spin of the pro V1 for it's shotmaking, workability.  Through practice and the added spin of the pro V1 i am able to work the ball more noticably in both directions, that really shows up more in my approach shots to the green that gives me better looking putts. When switching between the 2 models over the past years it became clear to me in 2009 that my overall scoring was improved playing the Pro V1.

I am in the same dilema. I am a 11 handicap and use the pro v1 but i dont hit too many greens in regulation so i am looking for a ball that gets more spin greenside. Which ball is recommened? Thanks.

Hi Trevor,

Pro V1s are long golf balls, but concentrate on spin and are great around the green; Pro V1xs are longer golf balls, and are better for distance, but still have a good spin rate around the green. It all depends on YOUR game. If you have a superior short game, consider Pro V1x. If you need help around and on the green, you might find it in your best interest to stay with Pro V1. The newest version of Pro V1xs have a very soft feel, highly similar to the prior generation of Pro V1.

My last bit of advice is to try both out. Use the Titleist ball fitting system to decide which ball you should use. You may want to go out two or three times and hit identical shots with each ball. Then, it's up to you.

I seem to have the opposite experience with regard to stopping power. My normal ball had been the ProV1, but I tried some experimentation. What I found was that the ProV1x went a few yards farther with a lower ball flight. What was surprising to me was that I found MORE stopping power with the X. Consistently, I was stopping or backing up everything from 8 iron on up. Partial shots still checked up nice for me as well.

Could it be that the ProV1 spun too much for me? That would explain the VERY high ball flight and the shorter distances. Maybe, it was so high that the spin had dropped off enough by landing to not come back. The extra height is almost a full club. As an example, my 8 iron carried about 150 and rolled forward with the ProV1. The ProV1x carried closer to 160, but it either stopped or came back a yard or so. Again, the ball flight was much better with the x as well.

Consider me converted to the ProV1x.
