I like the Golf Fix a lot.  But besides leaving me exhausted after the show, I am confused by Breed's suggestions to deloft the putter face by leaning the shaft forward.  I know he thinks it will  promote roll but it just seems like it forces the ball into the ground.

I read somewhere that the putter mfgs put a lot of research into determining that the optimal loft was somewhere between 3 and 4 degrees.  Why should we defeat that loft with a lean?  Why not just buy a putter with zero or neg loft?

Anyone tried his methods with success?

Greg I haven't seen the show, so I don't know what he has said.

Sometimes when I'm on the fringe, I hit down on the ball, striking the ball above the equator and the clubface in a negative loft position. This does push the ball into the ground forcing a hop and it comes up with forward spin, then it rolls nicely.

The idea behind my putting stroke is at impact I want the clubface at 0* loft, which causes the face to strike the equator of the ball, and have the putter head moving upward. Which causes a nice roll. That is the easiest way for me to hit the ball on the line I want and the speed I want...........now if I could just pick the right line and speed

I have seen this particular episode, I was curious myself whether this would work or not. I did give it a try, as I was always slightly "popping-up" my putts, leaving them short/running them by or even missing the line completely. Once I have become more proficient in doing this, I have holed not only more putts but my "misses" are closer or even dropping in the hole (if that makes sense). I am a Golf Fix junkie and keep quite a few of the episodes on my DVR to watch over and over, and this is one that I have watched more than a handful of times. Michael Breed is a great teacher and focuses primarily on putting, and has done quite a bit of research regarding this subject. Other episodes regarding this subject, Michael Breed has touched on the loft of the putter being lower/higher than the norm. He has included the "scientific" part of it and stated that if the loft is different than the optimal what the effects would be. Hope this helps.

Most golfers add loft at impact during the stroke. I think he just wants people to get that "feeling" of delofting the putter. If your putter shaft is at 90 degrees at impact, 4 degrees of loft will promote the best roll in most cases.

Thanks guys.  I've been trying his method on the hallway carpet.  Not the best controlled environment for my experiments.

(Below is the link to his show.  The segment about the impact point begins around the 12:00 minute mark.)

Years and years ago, they came out with a putter with a rounded face (Teardrop putter?) It was supposed to accomplish the same thing--but without  the forced forward shaft lean.  The radius of the putter matched the radius of the ball so that contact was pure with a forward roll as the result.  It must not have worked because the putter is no longer around.

What Breed proposes makes sense and seems to work.  Initial backspin can create inconsistent rolls and therefore inconsistent distances.

Gotta go back to my practice...but I'm not sure it is going to work with my inside-square-inside stroke.  It seems better suited for straight back and straight through strokes.
