My son recently played a round with me in WI.  He rented a set at the course that happened to use a TM SB 2.0.  Compared to his department store set, even the standard setup on this driver was far better.  This convinced him the game could be fun with an update.  I'd like to get him to go to an Advance or Cart fitter with an outdoor launch monitor.  He lives near Congressional and Burning Tree but I don't know if the shops are open to the public.  Any recommendations in the DC metro area - preferably within 30 miles of Congressional.  I'm hesitent to recommend a nearby GG - he'd probably end up with a stock OEM set of brands heavily promoted there.

The local Titleist Advanced Fitter is Roger Hatcher at the Golf Tour Trailer, located at the 1757 Golf Club near Dulles, VA (in the Virginia suburbs of DC) --- www.golftourtrailer.com.  You will hit off a mat but into an outdoor bay.

Another option is Wade Heintzelman at the Golf Care Center in Bethesda, MD.  He is not a Titleist Advanced Fitter but did appear on a Golf Digest or Golf Mag list of Top100 fitters -- www.golfcarecenter.com.  He fits indoors hitting into a net, but a number of tour pros stop in to see him during events like the AT&T National or last year's US Open at Congressional.

I've used both and like both -- you can't go wrong.

Thanks very much for the recommendations.  He lives off of Mass Ave so I should be able to get him as far Golf Care, if I can't get him into Virginia.

Have you check out GolfDom or the new Golfsmith?  Both are located near Tyson Corner Mall.

Don, Master Fitter Roger Hatcher at the Golf Tour Trailer, 1757 Golf Club near Dulles, fitted me for irons and woods last fall.  No hitting into a net, like at Golfdom.  He used a Trackman monitor and had me hit off a mat from a garage-like bay into the driving range (not into an open bay, just to be clear).  Not only did he have the data from the Trackman, but he could observe the flight of the ball and the roll firsthand.  He's also a former instructor, so he can give your son a tip or two.  And such a nice man.

The iron fitting took just over an hour.  I came back later, and fresher, for the wood fitting.  This took a little longer, as Roger searched for right combination of head size, lie, loft and especially shaft to optimize my particular ball flight, which was too high and had no roll.  He spent more time with me than I expected.  I am so happy with my clubs that I thought I should write to recommend.

Don't overlook the putter.  Yes, the Golf Tour Trailer can fit your son for that, too.  They capture alignment at address and at impact, path at impact, stroke path and rotation, shaft angle at impact, impact spot, speed at impact and stroke tempo.  This is the club that closes the deal, so don't just pick one off the shelf and think the parameters don't matter.

Really appreciate the thoughtful answers.  Almost makes me want to move back to DC for myself...

I've wondered about putters being worth an effort but I'm also in the market for a putter and by trial and error have found that the right putter can make a difference.

    Don,

Our local Titleist tech rep, Neil is a great fitter, he goes to different courses and events on a regular basis, where you could find at www.titleist.com/events

Being a D.C. local, I believe that Neil sets up bi-weekly at Falls Road golf course, which is in Bethesda, you can call the course to find out his exact schedule and set up an appointment.

All great suggestions.  The young man (if he is young then I don't have to be old..) will be following one of these great options.  I personally feel going to a big box store is like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates.  He will be looking for an outdoor site.  The local rep - Falls Rd will be a shorter drive if/when available.

Now I can only hope the fittiing is only mildly successful and I will still be able to whip him from time to time..

  9. Don,

I was also fit by Roger Hatcher, along with my friend Dave.  He did a great job with us both (separate fittings).  Dave got irons, I got woods and a driver.  Very happy with the results and I'll be seeing him for new irons shortly.

In my last conversation, he was leaning towards Roger.  He was going to pass while it was 100 outside but since it is also 100 on the inside (power outage from the same storm that damaged Congressional), he may have left town instead.

I've talked him into an outdoor fitting, and that is my primary wish.

If you come to their  site in Warrenton let me know I'm a member at  Piedmont just down the road in Haymarket we can get a round  in as well

  12. Hey Don O,

I would love to help out.  If you have any questions you can go the the Golf Tour Trailer website and you can get my e-mail address.  Seeing the ball as well as getting the numbers are a must.  There is a range of numbers that will work and the important thing is that they also fit the players eye.  If a high launch is desired we need to fit on the low side of spin.  If a low launch fits the eye, then we need a little more spin to keep it airborne long enough to get some carry.

Let me know how I can help you and your son.

To f/u, my son selected Roger Hatcher and was fitted for irons.  Roger worked first on grip, and length (I think they increased length 3/4 inches).  By the end, the iron head speed was up 6 mph because it was a more comfortable swing pattern.  They will still decide on whether or where to add a hybrid, but it was the first time he was comfortable with anything more than a 5 iron.

Seriously, just another testament that club fitting for a high handicapper can make all the difference in their enjoyment.  I will be with him in 2 weeks to see how these are working (we live 1000 miles apart).
