  1. I'm a 9-10 handicapper. I carry a driver, a 3wood and two hybrids. My set of old Pings includes a 47 degree PW and 53,56, and 60 degree wedges. I'm likely going to get a set of AP1s, but am concerned that I'm going to have an issue with my wedges: If I get irons 5-PW + W1 (48 degrees), and drop my current 53 gap wedge, I'll have a gap between 48 and 56. How have others dealt with the strong lofts on the AP1s? Do i need to go to a 54 SW and 58LW? i'm reluctant to buy new wedges right now.

Part of this involves how you like a wedge versus the AP1 for a gap wedge.  One option is to get a 50 wedge instead of the W1 at 48.  Then you'd have 44-50-56,  The 48 could also be adjusted to 49-50 degrees if you still needed to adjust for full swing distance gaps.  Even bending the PW to 45 and the W1 to 50 may help the distance starting at the 9 iron down.  Best determined on an outdoor fitting.

I did something similar with Eye 2 irons in 2011.   Carried 7-9 irons and used a 50-08 as a PW.   Other wedges were 54-11 (bent to 55), 60-07 and 64-07.   Later on I replaced the SM2 60-07 and 64-07 with SM c-c 62-07.

  4. I recently went with AP1s and got a 52 and 58 degree vokeys to go with my W1(48*). I would say if you were going to drop a wedge from your current configuration go with the 56. The 53 and 56 I imagine you hit fairly similar distances. You could also get the 60 bent to a 59. Or get a voke 58. Mine's a TVD-k and its one of the best wedges I've ever played. Hope this helps.

Peter - I also just switched from 712 AP1s to 714 AP1s.  712 PW loft was 45, and GW was 50.  I also have Vokey 56-11 and 62-7 wedges.  714 PW loft is 44.  I did not get 714 W1 or W2.  Instead I added another Vokey SM4 - a 50-8.  I now have 6 degree gaps from PW through LW.  This setup is working well for me.  I have Aerotech steel fiber shafts - i95 in my irons and i110 in my wedges. Hope this helps.

Peter, I just got my new set of AP1s a little before Xmas. I went ahead and got 6i-pw and the W1 and W2 wedges which are 48 and 52 degrees. I followed that up with 56 and 60 degree Vokey Wedges. Yes I am wedge heavy but that is where a lot of my game is played right now. I have played 3 rounds (unusual here in Denver) with the new sticks and love them! For myself, I was unsure about the 52deg wedge. Not any more! The club fits right in where I needed it to. Full shots or bumping it around the green it feels very solid. So that, as they say, is my 2 cents worth. You will love the AP1s if you get them. Just a thought, you could have your existing wedges bent to fill the gaps.... Fairways and Greens! Don T

I have 712 AP1s and go 4 degree gap each wedge. 48 PW from set, then Vokey SM4s 50, 54, 58. That works well for me. I dropped my 56, 60 cally wedge when I got the Vokeys and make every shot with my 58 that the 60 could.

  8. If I were you I'd drop the 56* and if need be bend the 60* 1* strong

I purchased the 714 with 5 - PW, GW 1, GW 2 and Vokey 58 wedge to replace a set of Taylor Made Burners. I could not be happier with the purchase and surprisingly the 9 through the wedge package seem a lot hotter than the Burners. I am hitting the ball a little bit higher but with more carry and certainly more accuracy. I highly recommend the purchase of both Gap wedges and then supplement with a vokey wedge for your high loft option. I also am a 8 - 10 handicapper.

My short irons (7-P + W) are AP2's.   That 2nd AP2 wedge is 50 degrees, than I went with Vokey 54 and 58 to even everything out and still keep 4 wedges in my bag.  Maybe go the same route with AP2 short irons to even it out?  If I would stick with all AP1 irons though, I'd go with a 52 and a 56.  All depends on how comfortable you are with 3/4 swings or so since youd be dropping the 60.

    Peter,

I'm an 11+ handicap and carry a set that is similar to your (driver, 4wood, and two hybrids). My irons are 2008 AP1's which has a 45 degree PW plus a 50 degree GW.  I also have a Vokey 56 degree SW.  Here's my suggestion for what it's worth.  Either get the W2 (52 degree) gap wedge with the AP1 set or take your current 53 degree gap wedge and have it turned down to a 52.  This would give you wedges of 48,52,56, and 60 degrees.  This would give you a consistent gap of 4 degrees and if you chose to turn down your current 53, there would be no additional cost for new wedges.  Hope this helped. Good luck.

I carry the older AP1s (8-PW) and have the lofts set at 36-41-46 (I carry driver 3W 7W, 4-7H and also have a 12 handicap).  Wedges are 54-11 and 60-10 bent 1* strong and 64-07.

You could bend your 56* wedge 1* strong.

I don't carry a gap wedge because I've learned how to work my PW.  On a full swing you shave 10 yards off distance for every 1/2" you choke down.  I also don't have an issue with a 6* spread between the SW and LW.  I had Eye 2 irons and carried Vokey 50-54 (bent 1* weak)-60-64.

Lou - that's a very helpful rule of thumb. I have become comfortable hitting my PW various lengths but not so with my other wedges. The 1/2 inch approximating to 10 yards is a very useful tool.

    Thanks

Hello Peter, I am an 11 handicap and in November I was fitted  and purchased a set of AP1 [ 5- PW ]  .The PW is a 48* and my pro , who did the fitting advised me to go with a 52* GW since I had a 56* and 60* Vokey.

So far so good with my distances, although  I am not good enough yet to be exact enough down to say a 5 yrd gap.  : )

I seem to be around 8 - 10 yrd in terms wedge incriments.

Good luck and play well !
