I've been stalking the fitting availabilities for the last several months, and there's a Titleist fitting at my home course in two weeks! A quick check with the funcrusher/boss revealed that, yes, I do have time to go and see what could be. I'm currently gaming TM P770's (not fitted, picked them up last year), and hitting them fine, but during a my last lesson my pro gave me some crap for not being in the correct shafts (R vs S).

I am not really in the position to buy new irons, as I was fitted and replaced my D (TSR3), 3W (TSR3), and picked up a U505 at the beginning of this year, but I am really curious to see what the implications of properly fit irons will be related to distance and dispersion compared to my current set up. The way I look at it, I'll have the specs on file to be able to go after when I have some extra cash on hand.

Has anyone else ever gone this route - getting fit and then purchasing at a later date? Did it work out? Did you wait too long and then find out that those specs were no longer applicable? Am I setting myself up for failure?

If this is a Titleist sponsored fitting where you pay $100 up front to schedule, it is only refunded with a purchase based on the fitting that day. For exactly the reason Titleist is allocating a trained professional for serious lookers. The intention is to not take time for only a demo.
If you really can’t purchase the clubs now regardless of results, you might consider waiting until late next summer when the 4th generation T series clubs come out. Major retailers can offer the chance for more of a demo, Between hitting off of mats rather than turf and the store’s interest in moving inventory, I’d prefer an outdoor fitting with all the options available.

As long as you don’t wait until the next model is released, the specs should be pretty accurate. The reason that Titleist fitters now charge $100 up front that can then be applied to a same day purchase is due to so many people using up the fitter’s time and not ordering clubs. That said, if you get fit and have your specs you can go to a trusted site like 2ndswing.com and trade in your TM’s which will help offset the cost of the new irons.

Yes. I did that with my first fitting. It was a fall 2014 fitting and I waited until the following March to order. No regrets. They do charge for fittings now so probably best to order right away unless you don't mind spending $100 for just the fitting. Funny thing is I have gone through 4 iron fittings in 10 years and they all ended up with the same shaft, flex, & lie angle.

Once you've established your habits, I'd expect to see little change in your specs. You're taking lessons now with a teacher, he's already seen enough to make a remark about your shafts. To be 100% honest, there are ALOT of men right between the criteria for S or R in iron shafts. Once again, there are fitters and there are salesmen. Take your time, hit several T series irons.

To be clear - I do intend on purchasing - just not next Saturday. Primarily because I don't want my wife to murder me.

I did pay the $100 up front, and as long as I don't reinvent my swing over the next year (it doesn't seem like I need to), I figure that it should be pretty easy to order. Thanks for the feedback!

Don't know if you've ever been to a true Titleist fitter (outdoors, on grass, and a full selection of shafts) but if not, in my book it's worth $100 just for the experience. Let them know up front what your preferred ball flight is, and what your looking to gain, and then let them do their thing. I guarantee if it's your first time you're gonna say "Oh wow!" a few times when you see the difference a proper shaft can make. True some people swing stock shafts great, but in my case the shaft selection made a world of difference. And don't worry about whether it has an R or S on it. The shaft weight and profile is way more important than the flex.

It was an awesome experience! I was surprised at how quickly we got done - I was only there for about 20 - 25 minutes. I live a couple blocks away from the course, so I got a good warm up in my garage on the mat before heading over.

Once I got there, I hit about 10 balls with my current P770 7i, then moved over to hit 5-10 with the T200's. The T150's came up next, and then swapped out 2 or 3 shafts, then finally adjusted the lie upright 1.5 degrees. In my mind I am still replaying the ball I hit after the adjustment - I turned around and told the fitter that "that ball was my ideal 7i shot - 160 carry, mid-low trajectory, and about 5 yards of draw". I then hit two more nearly identical before he said "yep - these are the ones. My job is done!" I hit a couple 4's and 5's just to verify, but they were definitely the ones.

I went from 148 carry with about 15 yards of dispersion to 160 with 8, increased RPM from 3800 to 5800, and increased my angle of descent from 45 to 50. I also reduced my club speed deviation down to 1 mph from 2.5. I couldn't have been more pleased with the results!

So, did you turn the $100 into a credit on a purchase, or are you keeping the TM’s and your marriage?

I’d have to think carefully with those results.

Jon, what shaft did you end up getting fit into and regular or stiff? I’m a numbers and equipment junkie, lol.

I have the t150 in the Nippon 105 stiff…love them!!

A good fitting always feels good.

Did you end up buying the irons the day of your fitting?
