Should I cancel my order and get refitted?

I was fitted today at Golfsmith. I have never been fitted before so this was a new experience. My swing was measured at 124-127 mph and I had a ball spin of 3,300. That is all I remember from the computer besides the ridiculous yardage and carry numbers, which could not be true.

I was fitted for a 9.5 degree 910D2 Driver with a standard length Project X Tour Issue X7a3 Flex: 7.0 shaft.

Now the problem. I was only given three shafts to try. All were off the rack shafts. The reason the fitter told me the Project X is the right shaft is because it was heavy enough to bring my ball spin around 3,000. Is this correct? Do I even want my ball to spin less? Also is this the right flex shaft for me? I couldn't find the information on this website or on the Project X site that would let me know. The person fitting me was very young but he did have a computer producing stats with each swing. I have read a few of the don't get fitted at Golfsmith comments and I think it's made me a little nervous.

My club was ordered tonight so if the spec's are wrong I'm sure I can call Golfsmith or Titleist and get it changed before the club is put together and shipped out.

    Thanks for any information

What was your launch angle? Yes, that is the problem with lots of local fitter who has only stock shaft.  I went to a demo day and that was much better.  Maybe you should go to one that has more shaft option to try out.

Matt: unfortunately I share your concern.  Anyone with that much club head speed, and you're at the upper tier, needs to have spin below 3,000rpm.  I don't care how low the launch angle may be. I would love to send you to an advance fitter and if you call the team at 888-Titleist, maybe we can find an outdoor situation with more head and shaft options.

I agree with Ryan.  You need to see the ball flight outdoors, plus it would be best to get a demo driver to compare on the course with your golf ball and old driver.  Steve D

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

I spoke to Titleist today and received and email from them as well. I was able to cancel my order with Golfsmith and will be going to the Titleist Tour Facility to get fitted for my driver.

Those club head speed numbers are similar to what the fastest on the PGA Tour would be -- I wouldn't think you would want your spin to be any higher than 3000 so that might be OK. maybe.  Any doubts about and of  this.??... I would find a good fitter in your area that does this outside where you can see ball flight and be able to verify ball flight that matches what the launch monitor says. And be sure to ask if they use Pro V 1 golf balls in the fitting.   I always have a little problem trusting these things indoors where all you can see is a computer screen and not verify the same ball flight.

  7. With your swing speed you would ideally want spin of 2500 or less per the charts that I have seen.  I swing about 113mph and had a hard time getting my spin low enough.  I recently got a D3 8.5* with RIP Alpha 60 X-stiff flex.  I love my D3 so far- has improved my driving immensely.  I found D3 to be lower spinning (backspin) than D2 and the RIP shaft to be slightly lower spinning than the Project X due to stiffer tip in the RIP.  Also went down to 8.5 loft to help lower spin.

Since Titleist does not provide X flex shafts in its fitting set we all have to end up taking a guess (I was testing the RIP and Project X in Stiff flex not x-stiff).  With the D2 9.5 and 6.0 Project X, my spin was about 3600-3800 and launch about 14.  With the D3 8.5 and RIP60 stiff flex, my spin was 2900-3100 and launch 10 degrees.   So from my experience from what's available in the Titleist fitting set, in terms of maximizing distance you would benefit from a refitting.  Some people prefer more spin for control or shaping shots though.  Plus the Project X feels nice.

I figured I would update again now that I've done the fitting at the Titleist Tour Facility in Carlsbad, CA.

First I have to say that going to the Titleist Tour Facility is definitely worth the money if you can do it.  One of their experts spent 90 minutes with me fitting a driver. It was just him and myself on their driving range. Everyone at the place was extremely nice to me and they took the time to explain every question I had and the reason for making the decisions they were making.

I was fitted for a much different club going to Titleist than I was fitted for at Golfsmith. After going to Titleist I am now ordering a 910D3 8.5 degree loft with a Diamana 'ahina 80 X shaft cut to 44.5".  Also, weight is being added to the club head. I chose to stick with a standard grip.

The cost of the club is increased by roughly $200 because of the special shaft but I will have the correct club for me and I think that is worth it. I don't purchase clubs often as the people at Titleist mentioned after looking at my beat up Ping Eye 2's so this is worth the extra expense. According to the launch monitor I gained 20 yards in distance with the new club.

This is a great story Matt!  Thank you for sharing and maybe we can send more players to Oceanside.  RC
