    Hoping to get some advice. Have been playing with only 13 clubs for a while now, and finally looking to fill the spot. I have a big gap between my 13.5deg 3w and my 3 iron(21deg). If I split the difference, I am looking at a 17deg club. But I am not sure if I should go "traditional" and fill the gap with a fairway metal, or purchase a hybrid; a club I have never tried. I have absolutely no issues hitting a 3 iron; however, I have a mental block when it comes to hitting fairway metals off the deck. Put a little wood peg under the ball, and I can drill a three wood down the middle all day long. Put that ball on the ground, and only God knows where it will end up. For these reasons, I am thinking the hybrid makes the best sense. Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    First thing is that a 13.5 deg 3 wood is not an easy club to hit on the fairway. Very few average golfers (and some low handicap players) struggle hitting a strong 3 or even a standard 3 wood off the deck. Remember that a 3 wood has a rather long shaft. Much easier to use a 19* 5 wood (easier to launch than a 17H and gets about the same distance) and specs are close (the 19 fww is an inch longer). I used to be able to crush a 980F 5 wood on the fairway. Whether you use a 17H or a 17-19 wood is a matter of personal preference. I actually hit a 21* 7 wood just as far as a 17* hybrid and about 10 yards farther than a 19* hybrid. I get around the golf course perfectly well with a 7 wood on most lies and a 5H on the tight lies. There are some that will tell you that a 2 iron hybrid is about the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have a friend who can bang a 3 iron off the deck all day but struggles to hit a hybrid or a fairway wood. Do a demo with a 17-19 fww, 17H and a conventional 2 iron is my suggestion (reason I say 2 iron is you appear to have no problem hitting a 3 iron).

    Interesting dilemma...  I am not quite sure a hybrid would help since it is effectively a smaller head than the 910F.  I think that the mental block would kick in with seeing the back bulge out.  Depending on the type of irons you currently play with, I would say look into getting a 2-iron.  The only down side is the 2-iron is not as forgiving as a hybrid or fairway wood.

    The other thing, is a wood swing on the deck is sweeping vs hitting down with an iron. I used to wail my woods off the tee back in the real wood days of golf but couldn't hit them off the tee. Also could hit long irons well. I haven't been able to hit anything above a 6 iron with any degree of consistency since 2006 and have been using a 7 wood and 5H to cover between the 3-5 irons.

    Meant do say hit woods off deck.

    Lou & Charn - Thanks. I did think about a 2 iron. I play AP2s, so I don't even know if a 2 is available. I think Lou is correct in that demoing a 5w & a 2h would help figure out what is best. As for the mental block, I should probably get my butt to the range and work on the problem whichever direction I go.

    I did notice that there is a 2 iron available for the CB set but didn't see one for the rest (maybe Titleist either doesn't advertise or they might make them custom). This falls in line with trying to find a 9 wood with any of the major vendors. Like I mentioned, not too many can hit a 15* fairway wood off the deck unless the lie is plush. Even with a 17 or 18 it has to be sitting pretty. Anything from 19-21* is rather easy to hit off the deck.

    Cris;

    I say 910 Hybrid. Since you already have a fairway metal and a long iron. The 17* will be a perfect filler in your bag. Give the hybrids a chance. But the best is to try out both the 910F and 910H... have a showdown between the clubs, and find out which feels best for you.

    Good Luck and Happy Golfing

    Thanks for the input. Not sure how I didn't know this before, but found out today that my club is holding a Titleist fitting day from 12 - 6 tomorrow. Perfect opportunity to see which is best for me.

    Try hitting the 910H 17* with a shaft intended for 19* (1/2" short).  I have seen great results with this combination for several players with your situation.

    This is a great idea and it works (although in a different situation for me). I've found a niche on fairway woods by cutting the shafts 1/2" and putting a lightweight grip on. My driver is 45" (stock Burners are 45 3/4"), my 5 wood is 42 and 7 wood is 41.5. The difference in swingweight between a rubber midsize grip and a Winn Excel RF midsize is 4 points. I've done this with a couple hybrids also with reasonable results.

    Good luck today! Please let us know what your thoughts are about the two clubs and which one you prefer! Either way, you're going to be very happy!
