Looking to replace my 712 CB's that are hard to beat I got fit for new irons by a recent tour van visit to my club. Glen said that they were fine and no need to change. Going in I thought the T-MB irons would be what I ended up with. After several combos and with close tie, I went with AP2 same shaft as the CB 's I love. Short irons about the same , but the 5-7 are MUCH easier to hit solid.
Most impressed that they were not trying to sell me something, they were trying to get what was right for me. Numbers were identical in almost everything I hit including multiple shafts and flexes ,feel was what they told to decide by. I have had great success with my CB irons but would suffer on off days especialły withna 4,5 iron. I've put my CB's up head to head with the last 2 versions of the AP2 's and actually hit the CB's higher and more consistent. I really think they made a significant positive change with the new version716 AP2
As for the T- MB's, they went a bit further but didn't feel even close as good as the AP2's. . The lofts are stronger so more distance makes sense. I hit the Ap1's and as in every past generation they are just not for me. I can hit them solid with some practice but with the AP2 I just hit them. First swing with the Ap2's, I knew. The rest of the time was tinkering only to find what I had was the best ( KBS tour in Reg files 1/4" short)
He then looked at my Driver, 915 D2 Rogue Silver Reg flex. Watched me hit 3 balls and said, " Next"
My 3 wood he shortened 1/2 " , put me in a 15 instead of the 16.5
He recommended trying the rogue silver instead of the Black that was in because I liked the silver in my driver so much. Black Rogue didn't have any feel for me. I thought it would go higher off the deck than the silver based on specs. Boy was I wrong!
Got the new 3 wood it's way better. . I'm hitting a 15 with the Rogue Silver70 reg shaft higher and farther than the 16.5 with the Rogue Black 60 Reg in it . On paper specs that makes no sense, on the course who cares what the specs say!
What did I learn?
1.Feel is more important than specs or expectations
2. Shortening your irons 1/4" makes a huge difference , shortening you 3 wood does too. This is especially important in clubs you don't tee up
3 don't believe what others tell you need or the advertising tells you what you need , Get Fit !!!!
