I have been fitted for a new set of 716 irons. The discussion we have had is whether to go with the AP1 or AP2, or possibly a blend. Do you have any thoughts on what factors should be looked at in deciding. Am 53 with a 10 Hdcp and have a driver swing speed of 103+. Hit irons solid with a draw.

A lot of golfers mix up there sets and I may do that as well IF i get fitted.

IMO (I'm no golf expert) I would get the 4-6 AP1s and then 7-W AP2s.  Definitely want my long irons to be more forgiving.

    What did the fitter suggest?

Let us know your final decision and best of luck!

Hi Mark, picking up a set of 716 is exciting. To be fitted with some of the best choice of clubs (Titleist AP1/AP2) for a pick-up is top-notch. That to me is 75% of the work done properly and out of the way. While it would be up to your likings and decision, I am a big proponent of the blend. I am a walker, and although I am only 58, my last 4-5 holes in a round becomes critical. So in a combo set, it would give me the edge to finish strong or maybe even stronger. Good luck!

    Hi Mark,

My "two cents worth" is that you should go with the 716 AP2's -- but the qualifier is to make sure your shafts are included in the fitting process. I base my rationalization on the following:

You are a 10 handicap index so you should generally strike the ball well and usually get a good ball flight and trajectory.

Further, if your driver swing speed is just over 100 mph, then you seem to generating plenty of power - speed through impact.

As such, with good swing speed like yours and with pretty solid and consistent ball striking, you should achieve a good launch of the ball on your shots. So, the forgiveness in the AP2 should be ample to assist you in your "mis hits" or "off centre" shots. I also think that with your skill level, you would appreciate the ability to control the ball better with the AP2's.

Again, just my "two cents" -- you and your fitter should have ample data to help you make an informed decision -- of course, don't forget the "feel" and "confidence" aspects of the two series of irons as well.

All the best in your deliberations and look forward to hearing from you on what you ultimately decided to do and why!

    Hi Mark,

I'm very similar to you - age 50, 10.6 handicap and same ss.  I just went with the full set of AP1s with KBS Tour 90 shafts.  I hit a bunch of different irons at one of those places that does brand independent fittings and the 716 AP1s came out on top.  They are very long and VERY forgiving - especially on toe hits which is my usual miss.  I didn't hit the 716 AP2s, but I owned the 714 AP2s and they weren't nearly as forgiving as the AP1s.  So it all depends what you're after.  For me, forgiveness is king.  I love it when I toe a shot a little bit and the ball still ends up on the green.

    Good luck!

First look at the launch/spin & carry distance to fill gaps correctly, this would require a full bag fitting. Also I take a look at what end of the bag I need the most help. May be adding hybrids or extra wedges or both?

I forgot to mention the long irons may like ap1 or hybrid. The new pw in ap1 & ap2 have strong lofts you may need to add a 50 or 52 wedge instead of 3 or 4 iron etc. It all depends on the numbers.

I'm a 6 handicap with similar swing speed and ball flight. I hit them both and went with the AP1s. I could still work the ball but figured the AP1s would make my more difficult days easier. Good luck with your search.
