I'm considering buying a set of AP2 714's, over here in the UK the shaft that comes as standard seems to the the Dynamic Gold R300 or S300 unless you go down the custom route.

I was just wondering why Titleist chose a shaft that is Low/Mid in launch as a stock shaft ? Does anyone play low launching shafts in this day and age apart from people that play links courses or play in areas with regular high winds ?

If you watch the pros on the TV  the majority of them seem to play high launching shafts in their irons from what i've seen, it gives you the best chance of stopping it on the green at the other end over a shaft that's bringing the ball in low and quick.

I know my specs as i'm completely standard, it's just a bit frustrating that the stock shaft is a low launching shaft otherwise i could have gone into a store and got a good deal on the 714 range especially with the 716 range being out.

While i'm here, can someone recommend some good shafts that Titleist stock which are mid to high or high launching. I don't want ballooning shafts, just a good shaft that launches it a nice height where you wouldn't be losing distance. I'm a stiff flex.

The good news is Titleist offers choice. The AP1 stock shafts are mostly higher launching and available as special order at no charge. You do prove the point that off the rack doesn't come close to fitting a majority of players. I have 1 hybrid and 1 fairway with the stock shafts. Everything else is special order.

One thing I will always recommend to someone is to get fitted and Titleist offers a number of great shafts at no upcharge.  All the clubs in my bag have been fitted to my needs and I am very happy with my set up.  I am 69 years of age and carry a 10 handicap.  See a fitter, is my motto.  Fortunately a friend of mine is a top 100 and a Titleist Certified fitter and his shop is five minutes from my house.  He has been at it over 25 years and I trust him to get me in the right clubs.

We chose that shaft because DYG Shafts are the number one iron shaft on Tour - Approximately 30-35% of PGA Tour players play them in flexes from S300-X100.  The higher the speed, the more spin is generated and the lower launching DYG helps the players control the trajectory so that it does not go too high. They try to hit an optimal trajectory with their speed and spin so they can have pin point accuracy.  Their 6 iron speed averages 127 mph and launches approximately 14° with about 6200 spin.

As Don said, we do offer many higher launching shafts at no upcharge such as the XP 95, 105, 115 as well as KBS Tour and KBS Tour 90.  We also offer Nippon Modus shafts, Pxi, and others at an upcharge.  We would recommend seeing a good fitting pro that can help you select the right shaft and flex so that you can achieve your optimal trajectory and achieve pin point accuracy, too!

Thanks for the detailed reply Cathi and the shaft recommendations.

I think you may have the Tour players 6 iron speed mixed up with their driver speed, no Tour player swings a 6 iron 127mph lol, bet they wish they could swing a 6 iron that hard.

The 127 mph would be the ball speed.

Yeh ignore that Cathi, i quickly worked out just after i posted that you were on about ball speeds but couldn't edit it lol.

I still think it was a mistake to choose the Dynamic Gold S300 and R300 as a stock off the shelf shaft, the average golfer won't get anywhere near the ball speeds of the pros to make the shaft work to it's optimum, also the Dynamic Gold shaft is a very heavy shaft which would need a high swing speed to make them effective as they are around 125g - 130g in weight. The average golfer would struggle with that weight.

  8. Almost 10 years and you’re still wrong!
