3 iron gapping

  1. I posted this is another section but it seems this is where I was looking for.

    I play 714 AP1 irons, XP95 R shafts w-4 iron.

I want to add the 3 iron as I am a good long iron player.

Will I have a gap problem if I add the 716 3 iron instead of the 714 to the set?

If the 716 is much longer than 714 I will not be in correct gap and might have to choke down.

    Any suggestions would help.

    Thanks,

In all honesty I cannot imagine the newer model providing such a significant increase in distance. Stick with the 714 or learn to love a hybrid (for me they offer much more versatility). It would not be worth getting just the 716 3 Iron... Hope this helps!
  3. Thanks for your response.

I don't like hybrids and am a pretty good long iron player so I will likely go with the 714 3 iron option.

Next strongest club in my bag is a 5 wood so the gap should be fine.

You can have a pro shop check - there may be some individual iron heads available for the 714s. The 3I may be easier to hit and maybe a little too long, but a 1/2 inch choke down should cover that. The hybrid may be a little easier to use from a fairway bunker or deeper rough than the 3I. All on what you need.

Haven't tried the 716's yet.  I play the 714 AP2, but can't imagine the 716 AP1 3 Iron would that much different than the 714. Since a lot of guys bench their 3I for a hybrid, you should be able to pick up a matching 714 AP1 3I for your set pretty easily.
