  1. Is there a significant disadvantage to using older wedges? I am playing gap, sand & lob wedges that I bought used online which are 8 or 9 years old. I mostly use my wedges for sand shots, full swings under 120 yards and the occasional lob shot over hazards. Since I'm not a great chipper I bump & run with an 8, 9 or PW most of the time. I have used new wedges in the past but am more comfortable with my older ones. I'm a senior player with a 12 handicap.

Always new technology is advancing, but not only that wedges wear down groves over time causing you to loose spin and control. If you are feeling uncomfortable with new wedges it may be you just don't have the right shaft, grind, loft and bounce combination for your swing.

I guess the question is, how do they feel. Do you hit the shots you want to? The on,y thing I've done with my older wedge is sharpen the groves. Still love it

It depends on how sharp the grooves on your wedges are. Sharper edges means more spin to help the ball land softer and stop on the greens or increase the back spin effect. Ask your pro golfer to check the condition of the grooves on your wedges. I recently changed my SM Vokey wedges (also 89 years old) to the new SM6 and noticed A LOT of difference on the back spin effect. But if it suits your game and you feel comfortable, I think there is no reason for a change.
  5. Some grooves may not be USGA approved. Also when the grooves and milling wears down you'll get less spin on the ball

I think that you would see a lot more spin with newer wedges. I can tell you that I replace my wedges twice every year. I have even done it as many as 4 times a year when I was playing and practicing more.

The disadvantage is if the grooves are worn out. You will get less spin for sure. I think depending on how often you play it's recomended to replace your wedges every two years. I just upgraded from the Vokey SM4's to the SM6's. They are butter!!!
