  1. Since I'm so happy for my new 716 AP2's I want to keep them good looking as long as possible. Of course I could chose not to use them, but then point of having them kind of disappear :-)

I know they are going to be scratched etc., but what do you do to keep them good looking? Do you also polish them?

    Thanks.

Mine are the original AP1s...so 8 yrs old. I wipe off the clubs after every shot, clean the grooves regularly, wash thoroughly every 30 days and wax shafts at the end of the season.
The better they look the better I feel about my game...which, by the way, is the justification I am going to use to get new sticks next year.

I wash mine after every round with a soft scrub brush on the grooves. Do NOT use any sort of bronze or brass metal brush to clean the grooves, as they are forged with a softer metal and can easily get scratched. Don't let them all sit in a bucket of water while you clean each individually. Just dunk, clean, rinse, dry. Sitting in water is not good for epoxy between shaft and head. There is nothing you can do about scratching them while playing. You can get iron covers to protect against bag chatter and scratching each other, but frankly, to me, that's a bit ridiculous. Besides, they are beautiful looking irons. I want to see that beauty when I look at my bag. I had a set of AP2-712s for 4 years until I got my 716s. I played well over 400 rounds and practiced a lot with them. They still look great, relative to the amount of play they got.

Since I play a lot, I also try to keep my grips clean. As it is now, I already change grips a few times a season. But keeping them fresh between changes is really important. I wipe them with a towel after most shots. I scrub them every couple weeks with a soft bristle brush and some Simple Green to get as much oil out as possible. They feel almost new after a good washing. Since I use Golf Pride New Decade white/black grips, cleaning them makes them look almost new too.

    Doug E -
Thanks for the "Just dunk, clean, rinse, dry. Sitting in water is not good for epoxy between shaft and head" bit of info; always nice for a knowledgeable person willing to pass along good information.

Great point about the grips, Doug. Probably the most important part of club care.

    Hey BS,

There are good suggestions for keeping your clubs clean and last long above. I do not recommend polish. This is a little over the top. The most important thing you have to do is you have to find a way to keep your clubs from rattling while in a golf cart or if you carry your clubs. Nothing will ding up your clubs more than the constant rattling they do while they are being transported. Some people will use individual neoprene covers to protect. Some people will buy golf bags with individual pockets that help minimize this rattle. What I do is get a long bath towel and interwind/snake it between each club in my back. I have been doing this with all my clubs for many years and it works well. Try this...it is inexpensive and see if it works for you.

    Best Wishes,

my 712 Ap2's still look as good as they did when I bought them 4 years ago. I clean them with a toothbrush and wipe down with a wet towel after every shot. I just love the look of these clubs!
  8. Hi - You have a really good set of clubs - if you look after them they will last you a lifetime - more importanty should you come to trade them - a pristine set will comand a better price - if thats your thing.
Some of my playing friends never ever clean their clubs - just a wipe after each shot if that - but this is down to the individual.

All the guys who replied above have made valid points - all good.

Personally I do it slightly different - works for me - low maintenance and clubs look as if bought yesterday.
1: Usually wipe club after each shot
2: As i carry my equipment I find neoprene covers excellent - they stop clattering of clubs that can lead to chipping / pitting - they clean the club face when taking on and off wiping excess grains etc that can cause pitting on the face - and also hide your clubs from prying eyes. If you go the club cover route do not get hard rubber or plastic versions they do no allow the club to breath when wet and can lead to rusting.
3:After the round - if you follow no 1 and no. 2 your clubs will be relatively clean - a quick wipe on the faces with hot water and dishwasher liquid -(i use ex girlfriends tooth brush - works a treat) wipe with warm damp cloth. The backs of the club rarely acumulate dirt - if do - a wipe with the damp cloth will do - dry out before putting covers back on. Personally i don't dunk clubs in water - no need -as drying is important with this method - time
4:Every few months - scrub the grips with hot water and dishwasher liquid - wipe dry - as the grips accumulate dirt and oils - then they are as good as new ... better.

Wow that took longer than thought - but hope it helps.

After every round before I play again, to clean my clubs, I grab all my irons out of the bag during a commercial on tv. I go to the sink and use a soft white brush and hand soap and clean each iron face off and dry with a towel. This only takes me a few minutes. It's a good idea as mentioned to clean your grips if needed every now and then. It's nice to have pride in your equipment and take care of them. They will take care of you!!!!
