Holy Smash Factor! I wandered in to a local golf shop here in Seattle on Sunday to try the new 917 D2. I have a driver swing speed between 97 and 100 mph and saw smash factors on the monitor between 1.56 and 1.59! The range at the shop uses NXT Tours for its practice balls so you know you are hitting a good ball too :) with my swing speed I was carry between 235 and 255 and rolling out into 270's which is a great drive for me (right down the pipe too). This was in a real range with launch monitor so you know the results are the real deal. I say all of this not for myself, but to give Big props to Titleist for putting out technoilogy that can translate these numbers! Keep up the great work!

    Justin,

Those numbers are totally bogus. Smash factor cannot exceed a value of about 1.52 due to instrument measurement accuracy. Trackman will tell you this themselves. If someone is reporting numbers that you cite, I would question either the equipment being used or the fitter has tweaked those numbers. I would look elsewhere for future club fitting. Investigate this yourself and you to will find out that this claim is bogus.

    Hi DV,

I questioned this also during the fitting. I couldn't recall how Smash Factor was calculated so I looked it up after. I found a few sites that seemed to contradict each other with some saying you could get above 1.5 and others saying you couldn't get above 1.5. The site that seemed to have the most credibility (and who knows anyway with what's on the "trusty" internet) seemed to make me believe that with conforming equipment, it would not be possible to get above 1.50 but that some manufacturers will have equipment just at, if not slightly over, conforming limits due to tolerances in the production process. Your right, I should definitely question the numbers and fitter, however, they are so good I just want to believe them ;) either way, ball flight, feel, forgiveness and real carry was great for a guy with my swing speed. Still giving tons is props to Titleist for making industry leading equipment.

    Happy golfing!

    Justin,

Agree about Titleist equipment. If you get a chance, go to the Trackamn website. There is a number of very good articles about smash factor. In a nutshell, they confirm what I had indicated earlier. The only way a smash factor could be as high as you indicated is if the club is not a USGA approved club meaning that the COR exceeds the maximum limit of 0.805. All drivers are at this limit plus or minus a few ticks due to manufacturing tolerances. What's important is your pleased with the club and the club is an authentic Titleist club. There are a lot of counterfeit clubs coming into this country from China so as they say if a deal looks to good to be true it probably is. Buy from a confirmed dealer.

    Best Wishes,

That max COR number is incorrect. The max COR allowed by the USGA/RA is .830.
