How do these clubs stack up to eachother in distance spin and performance out of the rough.

I would go with the hybrid because of how versatile it is, and I feel more comfortable with the hybrid

Don't know specifically about those clubs but generally a 5 wood gets 10 more yards vs a 3 iron hybrid. Using a hybrid vs a wood is, IMHO, a personal preference. I've actually used a 3 wood to plow out of the rough. If you tend to hit the ball with a downward blow, go with the hybrid. You have to sweep a wood. I personally have an easier time hitting a 7 wood (21) vs a 3H (19). My winning combination for 4 years now has been a 7 wood and 5H. I carry a full set of wedges (DCI 981 PW-GW, Vokey SM 54/11 cc - 60-07 and 64-07). The 5H gives me distance in between the 4 and 5 irons and allows me to carry a 3 wood (I recently acquired the DCIs and love the 6-GW to death; need to bend the 4 iron 1 degree and the 5 iron 1/2 degree to maintain lie angle diff of 1/2 deg between clubs).

The other issue about a 5 wood is a bit mixed. In general, they are not the easiest to hit off the fairway. If they are easy to hit on the fairway, some tend to balloon on the tee. A 5 wood is a bit limited in functionality vs a 3H. I'm more of a proponent of a 7 wood. They are easy to launch on the fairway (21-24 deg). Because of the steeper lie angles (57.5 to 58.5) vs the 3 wood or 5 wood, they are easier to hit dead straight. The shafts are much shorter (41-42") so it is easier to get a clean hit vs a 3 or 5 wood on the fairway. AND THEY GET BETTER DISTANCE THAN A 3H (sometimes even better than a 5 wood). They also get on the dance floor on the long par 3s.

It depends on your swing speed. If you have a higher swing speed a 5 wood and 3H will go about the same distance because a 5 wood will have much more spin with a high swing speed than a 3H. But if you have a slower swing speed i would go with the 5 woods.
  6. so my swing speed is 110. I hit my old 5W about 225. I want to lose my 3-iron, but that leaves a huge gap to my 4 iron at about 195. you think the 3H (19 degree) would fill that gap better?

I have spent a lot of time getting the top end of the set right. this works for me. 1. 19 degree is not a replacement for a 3 iron. a 3 iron is 21 degree loft. So I have replaced my 3 iron with a 21 degree 909 H. 2. I replaced my 5 wood with a 17 degree 910 H to fit the gap between 15 Fd en 21 degree H. I use the 17 degree of the FW, as a driving iron. the ball flight is lower than 5 wood. I have set the loft on 17.75 setting. works perfect. My wedges are PW 48 degrees, Miura 53 and 57 degree. I have simplified my short game, dont need 4 wedges, my score has dropped and my short game improved a great deal. Simple tip. unless you have a fetish for wedges, carry less wedges. learn to play them, chip with PW or 9 iron.

interesting question... it all goes down to preference and which one you will be more comfortable to play with. the wood will give you more distance because of carry. spin will depend on how you hit it. the hybrid is easier to hit in the rough. and as a personal preference, i use hybrid if i need to hit a low punch shot that will travel more than 150yds.

A consideration is the 5w shaft is longer than the hybrid which should result in more distance
