Mark Hensby , a PGA tour veteran was assessed a 10 stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball for 5 holes. Apparently he mistakenly picked up one of Pat Perez's balls on the practice putting green. He then put in play as a substituted ball on the 4th, a violation of the One Ball rule that the PGA tour has in effect as a local rule.

Ouch, yes, I saw that. The rule is designed to keep a player from having an "into-the-wind" ball and switching to a "down-wind" ball or a low ball for Par 5's and a high ball for Par 3's. This certainly was a case where he wasn't trying to take advantage but never the less, broke the rule.

It could have been worse, if he had not caught the error. It is a two stroke penalty for every hole played under the new rule. An honest mistake, but very costly. Believe the old rule was two strokes per hole, two hole maximum. Lesson learned, always double check your balls before teeing off when playing one ball rule. I do when playing tournaments and only play unopened balls. All other balls stay in the car. With respect.

Not sure worse would have mattered. I think he missed the cut by quite a bit, probably was going to miss the cut even without the penalty. Chuck, If you play unopened balls, does the box slow down their momentum on the course? Cheers buddy!
