My 5 year old son Dylan had his first golf lesson with First Tee yesterday..  He made me proud, only one to hit the target in his group.  So my mom printed the picture and framed it.  My son couldn't stop looking at it last night and can't wait for his next lesson which is today.

Hopefully he sticks with it, nothing better than a father and son hitting the links...    Anyone else have kids that play golf?

That is great stuff.  I have two boys, 5 & 7 that have started to play the game and it couldn't be more enjoyable to see them get excited when they do well.  I'm looking forward to the upcoming years where we will get to spend countless hours together bonding on the course.  I can't think of a better way to spend time together with your sons than on the course!

    Christopher,

That is terrific. So glad your son not only enjoyed it but also did well.

I think the most important thing is that he enjoys the game. There is so much to get out of it. Integrity, self discipline, exercise, handling adversity, etc.

I would humbly suggest one thing. Success in golf is great but is not the end all be all. I have played with great players who are unhappy on the golf course (and not enjoyable to play with) and have played with poor players that love the game and are enjoyable to be around. There is a fine line to balance. Hopefully Dylan becomes a great golfer. But if he doesn't, as long as he enjoys himself and is with his father on the golf course, and his kids and grandkids some day, I would consider that great success. So much enjoyment and positives can come from this game. There will be an inevitable time where he will not win or not be the best etc. To be able to handle that and accept that and then continue on enjoying the game (and working to get better if he so chooses) is really the key in my eyes. Try to talk to him about not only the results but how he gets those results. The interest, the effort, the fun of it, the challenge, etc. Golf and life are very similar. It takes a lot of the same things to be successful (however one defines success). Because if he has the determination, tenacity, etc and puts the effort in he will probably continue to have great results. And if he doesn't it will not really matter as the focus (success) is really determined by what leads up to the result. Think about this. Maybe I am right, maybe I am wrong. You will able able to decide on how best to achieve the best thing for him. All that matters is his happiness.

Good luck and you should be proud of your son. He sounds like he has a great dad! All the best.

    James,

I couldn't agree with you more.  One thing i tell myself all the time is to not push him.  I can only introduce him to the game and if he wants to continue and get better, then i will do everything in my power to make that happen whether it's taking him to lessons or sending him to golf camp.  But you're right, the most important thing is that he's happy and he's enjoying the game regardless if he's shooting a 100 or 60.  Time will tell.

I will say one thing, my son is the most laid back person I know so we may have to work on his timing ;).

Thank you for the advice though, much appreciated.

    Christopher,

    You are welcome.

Dylan has a great father. I bet he is as proud of you as you are of him. I can see he is in good hands.

All the best and I hope you both have many decades of great times together on and off the course.

Thats a great photo, be proud and have lots of fun getting Dylan into the game.  My grandsons are both playing and love going to the course with Granpa.  They tee up at about 100 yards and play in from there.  We watch the tour together when we can, they're both Bubba fans.  Wish Titleist made a quality set of kids clubs and kid sized hats.

    Way to go Dylan !!

I have 2 boys ,18 and 9 and they both play and enjoy it. Good thing is they both enjoy practicing as well.

Some of the most memorable times of my life have been on a golf course with my boys.

Now the problem is the 18 yr old is creeping closer to beating me , I should be able to hold him off for a few more years though.

Enjoy the time with him, it goes by way to fast.

    Play well .

I have an 8 year old daughter and a 5 year old son. I have been taking them out to my course in the evenings after 7:30pm, and we play a few holes, or at least putt on the greens, drive around in the cart and look for deer, and wild turkeys and rabbits. There is a also a 40 year old or so snapping turtle that resides at our course. I just want the kids to enjoy the scenery and hopefully they will become addicted like I am. Best line came from my daughter a couple years ago when we saw a deer when it was just starting to get dark. She went home and told her mother that we saw a reindeer. It was classic.

Thanks for sharing the story from your son's first lesson.  It's great to see the kids get excited about playing golf.  My oldest is 7 and just starting to play a little.  The North Texas PGA Section has a great camp that he went to last summer and he is getting involved a bit more at our club.  It's great to see the kiddo's showing an interest in something that we enjoy so much.  I can remember playing golf with my dad and hope to have some of those same memories over the years with my boys.

    Awesome job by your son!

I have two boys, ages 5 and 6.  I've been taking them both with me to the range and course for a couple of years.  The older is the better of the two at this point, but the younger will catch up quickly.  They both love golf.  I'm really fortunate in that our local course is home to a Top 50 US Kids instructor that runs a camp for the little ones every summer, to which my boys go.

The oldest also played in a US Kids local tour event recently.  He finished dead last but had a great time.  (The winning kid, a 5 year old shot a 37!  I wish I could shoot that well.)  I gave him a Pro V1x to use during the event, which he thought was cool since he was being like dad.

The picture was the two of us discussing a putt.  You can't put a price on memories like that.
