Grove Spearly
Fort Myers resident Grove Spearly, 83, shot a 1-under-par 71 from about 5,300 yards at Kelly Greens Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers on May 10.
A Penn State University employee for nearly three decades before moving to Fort Myers in 1990, Spearly routinely shoots his age, although not by so great a margin.
“It’s embarrassing. I tell people I had a good scorekeeper,” said Spearly, anticipating good-natured flak from regular playing partners for his strong play. “I’m called a sand bagger and (am asked), ‘Why aren’t I playing from the back tees?’ I must confess I’m fairly flexible and in fairly good health for my age.”
Spearly — who has never shot in the 60s but has broken par a few times, generally when he was back home at Centre Hills Country Club in State College, Pa. — has ranged anywhere from his 71 to an 87 with a new set of fitted, Titleist clubs, which replaced his long-standing support of png clubs.
“I’ve had png clubs for thousands of years,” he said. “The look of a club in my hand is what counts. I wasn’t happy with the new Pings I pulled out.”
Fitted clubs, too, are of utmost importance, Spearly stressed.
“There’s a (golfer) here I play with, and it’s obvious his clubs don’t fit him. It’s very painful to play with him. But that’s his life.”
