  2. A guy in our golf league has played it twice (from metro Detroit). He told us the stories a few times but I can't remember off the top of my head who he knew. But it was through work and I believe he worked for the auto industry.

That's the closest I will ever get to Augusta.

Pretty sure at least one of our long time members has played at mecca. Hope he sees this post and he will share his experience.

Great idea for a post Aaron and I hope for some interesting stories. But I'm not sure how many of us common folk get to breathe the rarified air of Augusta Nat'l. I did win their ticket lottery and went to a practice round in '16 so I've got that going for me...
  5. I have not had the pleasure. Fanciest courses I’ve played are Torrey Pines, Bethpage Black, Sawgrass, and TPC River Highlands. I’ve visited but not played Baltusrol and Shinnecock.

As I approach retirement, I'm planning on getting on the waiting list as a volunteer. It may be easier than getting a ticket. My son and I have played the ticket lottery for years and he got lucky 2 years ago and we had Saturday tickets. I don't have connections to the captains of industry nor have a relative in Augusta. Playing is not on my bucket list for that reason. Just watching another Masters on-site is, though.

Wishing you the best of luck, Don. One of my buddies was a volunteer for about 15 years at the Masters and finally decided it was just too expensive to go up there for the week. Found lodging difficult and it was a three hour drive from Charleston every day. Asked him about getting on the list and he assured me the list is many years long. Most volunteers have been there forever and do not leave. The biggest obstacle is trying to find a place to stay while you are working there as a volunteer. You do not have uniforms like at most tournaments. They wear a yellow helmets similar to a construction site hat with their hole number on it, but they did get to play the course on Monday after the Masters. I wish you the very best but your chances might be best with the lottery. Keep applying every year. I asked about it once and felt it was basically for the locals and those who have contacts. That is how my friend got his gig. Not to shoot down trying, you have a 50/50 chance, either yes or no. Cannot hurt. Best of luck. The Master's is Mecca and a world of it's own. Go for it, pal......

LOL, never said I planned on volunteering for more than a couple of years. The rents are steep. Just read houses go for 25-100 K per week. I was quoted a price of $240 a night for a low end Hilton property 45 miles towards Atlanta. Even Athens was $300 a night. For laughs, the Marriott downtown Augusta had rooms - $997 a night, minimum 3 nights, no cancel. My son did get us an attic room at a corporate mansion home rental gratis. I guess lots of Augusta families won't be taking a great vacation this year - no visitors and no $25K+ bonus.

To note, I'm 2 hours from Whistling Straits and will be driving daily for the Ryder Cup. Still have to pay $300 a night to commute an hour each way if you find a cancellation. The 2015 PGA was booked at least 6 months out, out to a 50 mile radius.

While only 1 round, 3 nights at 45 miles would be no more than a 2 night - 3 day package at Spanish Hill to play Pebble and the other 2 in the rotation. ...Dream big or go home.

In my dreams, however, I have played the ticket lottery for years and I am still waiting to have the opportunity to walk this magical golf course. With all the changes to the golf calendar in the current year, I guess 2022 is my best chance to win anytime soon.

  13. I have been fortunate to have played it three times. One of my clients is a member and we typically stay off the first tee in the Robert Trent Jones Cabin. Great location to the first tee, practice facility and dining room/champions locker room.

I have posted some pictures on my instagram account if you wish to check them out... @Chris92009

The 11th hole was one of the most challenging holes on the course each time I played it from the tournament tees. Very hard tee shot and of course tight approach to the green next to water from 200+ yards! Felt like a par five!

    Cheers, Chris

Thank you for sharing pictures and memories of such an amazing golf course which you've been fortunate to play three times.
  18. Chris:

Color me green with envy. Played the course many times over in my mind, hopefully a lottery win will at least get me to see it in person.
  19. I will add this to the discussion; the greens are the hardest part of the golf course IMHO. If you have played it or get the chance to, when warming up spend lots of time on the putting green!

also, every green has a variety of sub-greens so to speak. For example the second hole has three zones, if you are not on the zone with the hole/pin you will have a hard time one or two putting! The Fifth hole I think has seven zones which makes it one of the hardest greens in my opinion on the course. The back nine greens are easier than the front nine greens for some reason but they are still challenging!

    Cheers, Chris

Chris, did you play the week after the Masters? Thanks for sharing your experience and what a wonderful course. No wonder is referred to a Mecca down here in the South. I have been there many times but never had the opportunity to play it. Remember, the Masters does not begin until number 10 on Sunday. The closest I will probably get is The Reserve in Aiken, in the spring of 2021, once I get released from my Drs. Understand a lot of similarities. Take what you can get.

The first time was a struggle since I was getting used to the greens and how the course slope plays. However, after that round each time became easier and I scored very well.

What a great experience...I view myself as fortunate to have had this opportunity!
