I am looking at booking lessons and I am curious what everyone looks for in lessons? I am thinking of doing 3 different styles. Range, chipping/putting, and playing lesson. I just started golfing again this year and want to set myself up for success. I would love to hear about other team members experiences.

For me, it's all about the relationship. Really "shop around" the find the pro you feel most comfortable with and that matches up to your improvement expectations. Just like dating (as best I remember since it was over 40 years ago) there are good matches and some that just don't work out. Once you narrow down that selection you can then build a priority plan on what you want to improve. Best of luck. Hope it goes well.

Find a coach that fits your style of play and trust the process. Put in the work and reap the benefits!

...I only have to dig back 25 years for dating analogies, but I have had 4 golf instructors. That was 3 over 2 years and the last one for 9 years. Not terribly different in some regards from dating. My current one is a WI best teacher award winner twice in the last 3 years. Good thing I got him before he became famous.. He had quite the job needing to retool someone proudly self-taught (pride before the fall).

Communication is really important. You want to find someone who not only can teach proper technique and swing mechanics, but also someone who is a good listener as well. If you like the golf swing you currently have, steer clear of someone who wants to change too much right off the get-go.
  6. Definitely agree with Dale, coach and player relationship is important in order to get onboard with an improvement plan. My own two cents on the subject is to find a facility with indoor practice space. I live in Minnesota and it's great to have all winter to work on your game. Good luck and have fun.

Good investment overall. I will agree that you need to find someone that you gel with. I went thru maybe 3 instructors until I found a guy I have taken a number of lessons with over the years. I would suggest spacing out your lessons. I have seen people do a flurry of like 6 lessons in 3 months...personally, I think that is way too much to comprehend / practice/ engrain at once. I like to have 1-2 lesson takeaways that may take me 3-6 months to put into play. Only then would I go for another lesson. Each year I identify 2 things that I mostly want to improve then I work hardest on those parts of my game for the year. Next year, 1-2 more things. etc. But that is just me. I would get frustrated if I had 8 key things to work on all the time.

    Good Luck!
  8. I prefer a teacher who uses technology to their advantage. Slow mo camera with Trackman/Foresight(?)/etc data is the best combo, in my opinion. I’ve been to lessons where the teacher tries to change your swing to their ideal “perfect” swing, and I’ve been to ones who mold their lesson to your swing and tweak different things here and there. The latter is 1 million times better (I feel like that goes without saying). I also feel that hitting out onto a range is much more beneficial than hitting into the screen - especially if you’re working on shot shaping. The visual from the Trackman is great, but seeing it in real time AND on screen is awesome.

Find someone who will meet with you first and make sure you feel comfortable with them . Make sure they speak in a way you understand and will work with you and within your limitations. You don't want someone who cant explain something in a way you understand or wants a complete swing change if you don't have the time commitment.
