Personally, I lean towards blades. There's something about the precision and control you get with them that just feels right to me.

Sure, they're less forgiving, but when you hit that sweet spot, it's pure magic. Cavity backs have their perks, no doubt, especially for those off-center hits, but for me, it's all about that intimate connection with the ball.

What about you all? Blades or cavity backs, and why?

After watching a pro hit the new Titleist T series improving irons or should I saw four iron (Utility and T350, 230 yards dropping at a 45* angle on his target) at our recent TTI at Scottsdale, think Titleist made a believer of him on how much a game saver they can be over the blades. The smile on his face told the store. Yes a blade does have the purest of feel but when you are playing for the kinds of money these guys/gals are playing for, most are going with a blended set of irons these days. Consistent distance, forgiveness and accuracy are high on their priority list. Of course when choosing a set of clubs it is all about personal choices. Even when working with a qualified fitter. .

Cavity backs for me. I've always played cavity backs and for me it's hard to find time to work on my game so that blades can be part of my bag. My wife played blades early in her golf years and now plays cavity backs. For her, it's about the forgiveness you get with the cavity backs.

Like 90% of all golfers, it’s a good day hitting the sweet spot more than 10% of the time. T series irons accommodate my misguided swings quite nicely. As well as help me get the best performance from my slow swing/low height shots.
I have a set of 1980 Professional model blades with persimmon woods. Looking at them on the wall provides better imaginary results then when I take them out for a trial. But they are jewels.

I'm a 13 handicap so cavity backs for me.

Cavity backs. With the addition of forged cavity backs you can now get forgiveness and feel in one club.

Cavity back for me. I've never been consistent enough for blades. I've hit a few and when I hit dead center on the sweet spot they feel fantastic, but if I'm just a bit off center they punish me. I've always been amazed at seeing and hearing a pro level player who can control the exact position on the club for ball contact. I've heard pros that analyze each shot with their caddie, discussing distance first, and then things like what trajectory they want, how much spin they can get, draw, fade, how much backswing to adjust for the chosen club, and guys like Bryson who even discuss which groove they want to hit it on. Those guys play blades.
Reality is, it's just not me. My thought is hit it straight and get it to the intended target. Those guys play cavity backs.

Cavity backs for me too. I'm not consistent enough for blades.

Cavity Backs... Because thats what my fitter said fit my swing!
  10. I have been playing blades all my life and just can't get myself to switch. I may consider a blended set one of these days.

I've played blades, or compact irons most of my life. Not only do I like the feel they produce when hit properly, I love the way they look at address; compact with a thin top line. Unfortunately I'm at an age (67) where I'm losing muscle mass, club head speed and strokes.

When it's time for new irons, and it's getting close, I'm putting my ego aside and getting something a little more forgiving.

Cavity backs all the way like T200 or my C16 irons.

Blades will give you the ultimate workability, but the way I see it, if the T100 is good enough for Jordan Speith, I’m sure they are good enough for me

I've seriously looked at changing to cavity backs the last two times I was fit for irons. I have played blades since I was a teenager and I'm in my 60's now. Both times I have ended up selecting blades. I'm a 2 handicap and although I've lost some distance over the years, I found the feedback you get from blades is more important to me than getting a few more yards and more forgiveness on an iron. I have no problem hitting a longer iron than my playing partner's.
