  1. Hi, I have 4 Vokey wedges, about 6 years old. I see on ebay lots of "groove sharpeners". They claim they are legal and recondition the grooves, but I am sufficiently worried that they might be illegal and/or ruin my wedges, that I wanted to post this before I did anything. What is the offical view on these from Team Titleist, I wonder? If they are legal, is there a recommended tool, should I ask my pro to do this, or is it OK to go ahead and do this myself? Many thanks

    Hi Neville,

I have seen these groove sharpeners as well. The use of the tools is not, as we understand, illegal but you would have to find a way to ensure that you had not altered the volume of the groove or it's conforming construction - if by using one of these tools you altered the construction of the groove to make it fall outside of the guidelines laid down by the R&A and USGA, then your club would be illegal for events requiring conformity.

We certainly do not recommend any tool or any recommended partner for regrooving services. I think the best thing to do would be to submit a query to the R&A (which can be done at http://www.randa.org/en/FooterSection/Contact-Us.aspx )

    Hope this helps.

  3. Neil, many thanks for the reply. Thankfully I have not done anything, so at least I have not ruined the wedges. I think you are right, the burden of proof would be on me to show that I still conform. At my standard of play, I doubt whether this would ever come up, but that is not the point, of course. I am happy for you to close this thread, I think you have answered it. Neville

    Hi Neville,

It's an interesting point and thank you for raising it.

Not sure my answer gave absolute clarity, but as with many of these questions the R&A should be able to provide more insight.

Be interested to hear if any other members have other perspectives!
