Whats everyone's thoughts of playing with the pin all the time? I have heard quite afew people at my club complaining that the ball bounces back off the pin?

I don’t mind it I think it gives me more of a target to aim for........still miss though. ‍♂️
  3. Paul,
It would seem slightly churlish to gently point out that if it bounces back off the pin, it's probably been hit marginally too hard....
Personally, if I hit the pin it's usually saved the ball from going off the green, so I consider it a bonus

I feel ok about playing with the pin in or out so really doesn’t bother me.

  6. Paul,

I agree with JT that more often than not the pin has saved me from a longer next putt if I hit it too hard. Also, since I tend to play by myself most of the time not taking the pin out and having to replace it saves me a little time on each green so I can keep up the pace of play.

I am of mixed opinion. On long putts I like the pin in for depth perception it does make it easier to lag a putt to tap in distance. Once I am within 10 feet I prefer the pin out. I like looking at an open hole.

I’ve no complaints about this, and as above I too feel if helps me focus a bit more on my putts.
I personally haven’t had many bounce off and said that would have been in if the pin wasn’t in.
I also think it does speed up the game a little too.

  9. I like it in generally but one of my playing partners had two bounce outs at the weekend- with the upturned cups I think this exacerbated the chance of this. The fact it was also very windy also meant the pin was moving too.

It definitely speeds up play and helps me line up my putt - I take my glasses off to putt!

I agree with Scott, I used to putt with the pin in for long putts anyway but prefer it out for the short ones, especially if it’s windy and therefore moving around a little.

I think there are other contributing factors to a putt missing at the minute than just having the pin in. If we're talking Covid golf, then a lot of places have deployed 1 of 2 solutions to reduce contact points in the hole:

    1. put traditional cups in upside down so the ball doesn't go all the way to the bottom. Sometimes a ball may 'bounce' on one of the ridges on bottom of a cup and then pop out. I also believe that traditional cups are wider at the top than bottom, so when whey're put in upside down, the hole is effectively smaller than normal, which may be a reason people feel they're harshly done and experiencing more lipouts.

    2. Sponge tubing around the pin to stop ball going to bottom. Depending on the height of the tubing, you may still get the bounce and pop out effect.

Aware some clubs have purchased bespoke pin attachments that allow golfers to retrieve ball with zero direct contact - these look like the best solution to the Covid problem.
