I'm making the jump from Android to iOS (64GB iPhone 6 comes in tomorrow) and have started compiling a list of apps to install. There are a lot of apps that are only available for iOS or simply work better on that platform (probably 90% of the reason for switching), and I'd like to use that to my best advantage.

    Here's my current list:

    • Golfshot GPS
    • PGA Tour app
    • Play Memories Mobile (for my Sony Action Cam)
    • USGA Rules of Golf
    • Ubersense
    • Dark Sky
    • The Grint
    • the Titleist app

Obviously, Play Memories Mobile and Dark Sky are not golf specific, but they are helpful either on the course or on the range.

So what would my fellow iPhone users suggest in addition to these apps? I know there are a variety of golf booking apps, golfer networking apps (any users of All Square?), and swing analyzers/video capture apps. Keep in mind, the app doesn't have to be golf specific as long as it serves a valuable purpose on the course or on the range.

I have a few you mentioned and they're all great.   For the GPS i use Mobitee.

    What's missing and valuable:

GHIN (post scores or look up someone's HCP)

    Golf Channel

    Masters

I have the 6 and love it..  Good pics and the slo mo is awesome...

    Enjoy the phone

I looked at the Mobitee app, but I'm not at all familiar with it. One of the screenshots made it appear as though you could use the camera for an augmented reality type scenario to get your yardage? If so, I'll definitely have to check that out and see how I like it compared to Golfshot. I'm hoping that the GPS issues I've been having with my Galaxy S4 were limited to that phone or possibly Android because I'd very much like to narrow things down to a single GPS app.

I don't have an official handicap as of yet (just going with what The Grint gives me) so the GHIN app might be something to look at.

Not sure if I'd get much use from the Golf Channel app, but I'll have to give it a try. Had it (I think) installed on my Android at one time and the experience was less than stellar.

As for the Masters app, I always install that for the tournament, but it's not something I like to keep around for the rest of the year. Maybe since I did get the 64GB model I won't mind the little bit of space the app takes up, but I also just don't like to have apps laying around that don't have an everyday purpose. We'll see...

Thanks for the suggestions though. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out!

    No problem, glad to help.

The Golf Channel app i use to read the news when i'm bored somewhere..  Good layout and easy to read, IMO.

I did hear about the Grint and providing a HCP.   No way of signing up at a local course to get your GHIN?  I don't believe you need to be a member at a course to get a GHIN.  I'm not a member and I sign up every year at my local course.  It may be needed if you wanted to play in some tournaments.

As for the Mobitee, i really love it especially if you've playing a course you've never seen before.  It provides the layout of the hole so you can see what it looks like and then you can move the lines to see how far something is from your lie.   I bought it a few years ago for $9.99 (special sale) and the best part there's no yearly fee.   As for the GPS, i've never had an issue with it and does not drain the battery.    It has other features also but I just use it for GPS/Yardage and keeping score.

I hear you on the Masters app, thought I throw it out there :).

    Cheers and play well.

Dave - I have used the FreeCaddie app on my Android before. While I did enjoy the simplicity of it, I also felt it lacked some of the other features I wanted without paying for the premium version. And as for the premium version, it never was clear to me exactly how some of the features like shot tracking worked. Does it save the tracked distance for each club and build a database so you can find your average distance for each club? Things like that just left me a little unsure about spending the money when I could get everything from Golfshot.

Byan - I have used the Golf Live app on the Android as well, but I'm up in the air about installing it on the iPhone. I just haven't been watching as much golf lately, but there are plenty of tournaments left in the season - some of my favorites - so that could easily change.

Christopher - Honestly, I've never asked anyone at my local course. I always assumed you had to be a member or pay a fee. Definitely something for me to look into as I do want to play competitively at some point.

Thanks for the info on Mobitee. I noticed that they had a free version and a premium version for $24.99 in the app store, but I didn't see where it explained the differences between the two - didn't see anything on their website either. I'll certainly be on the lookout for a sale though - that's a good deal!

Download the Golf Live Extra app for actual golf footage. And to fill the spare time try the WGT golf mobile game!

    Richard,

The apps you mention are all good choices.  I might suggest that you look at a GPS app called FreeCaddie.  You can find it easily enough in the App Store, or use this URL address.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/freecaddie/id303296542?mt=8

I have been using this great little app for 3 years and I find it has all I need.  Very accurate yardages.  I am not one to play with my phone while on the course, so I am not too interested in a lot of features.  Just give me yardage numbers.  The display is best of breed, easily readable and uncomplicated.  You cannot go wrong with this app ,,  after all it's free.  I tried all of the others, and while they all work great, only FreeCaddie gave me a display, and an ease of operation second to none.

Hit em straight  and in the words of the venerable Mr. Harvey Penick, "take dead aim".

    Hi Richard,

Here's what I have and what I do.  It has been tried and true for me during all Tournaments, League Play, and Money Games:

    • Put the phone down and never use it during any kind of Golf Outing
    • Buy a good Rangefinder and use it so as not to confuse folks you are looking at your phone.
    • Get the course information booklet from wherever you are playing and make continual notes in all situations your are faced with. Keep it safe, and add to it each time you play that particular course.
    • Record all your data information (GIR, Fairways, Putts, etc.) in your booklet or on your personal scorecard. Retain the information until you finish the round.
    • Record all that data once you have completed the round and can log on to the Titleist website to record and view your stats
    • Have a pretty good understanding of the rules of golf BEFORE you venture out. Ask questions if you don't know.  You can always declare a provisional ball and have the question answered once you have come back in.
    • Finally, be respectful of your playing partners with "pace of play". If you are fiddling with all your apps and trying to plan your next shot, it would seem to be an interference with what you would want to do.

These are just what I do to ensure that I have a good round as well as my playing partners.  What you do is totally up to you.  So to answer your question, you really don't need anything else.  My humble advice....Less is MORE.  Best of luck to you!

    Steve,

All great points..  I'll admit, I look at my phone a lot while playing golf but i definitely try to keep up the pace of play..  However, I feel i'm not as social with the players b/c of my phone..  That may need to change...

I do play with one player that does just that, range finder, scorecard holder and that's it..

Less is MORE couldn't be more true...

    Thanks for sharing.

Steve, you do make some good points, but I'm afraid you may have gotten the wrong impression about the way I play. When playing in a group, I only use my phone for distance and scorecard. I keep the phone in my pocket (on silent) and pull it out only when I need to. I enter my scores while waiting for my playing partners to putt out or tee off. I don't take calls unless it's my wife, and I don't reply to texts unless it can be answered quickly and discreetly. I do use shot tracking and record video from time to time when I play by myself, but not if it's going to disturb the other golfers on the course. I understand you might think I'm missing out on something by using technology on the course, but I don't. I walk most of the time and interact with my playing partners just like anyone without a phone would. The fact of the matter is, I can do everything you mentioned in less time and with less effort through the use of one device that I already have. No need to spend hundreds on a laser rangefinder or struggle to remember what happened during the round so I can jot it down later, it's already done. When I finish a round, I can walk off the course and go on to the next thing. So, while I appreciate the advice, please remember that people use technology differently and that some can be quite responsible about it. Thank you.

i really like and use golfshot. it gives accurate distances and shows an overview of the course and you can adjust where you want to hit the ball for distances. iit usually is within 1-2 yards of my buddies rangefinder.
