Golf Ball Paint

The paint on a golf ball is about much more than aesthetics. Paint precision is a major focus in the golf ball manufacturing process because anytime you put a layer on the golf ball, aerodynamics are impacted. Even just two ten-thousandths of an inch can make a difference. To put it in perspective that’s the size of a red blood cell. Dealing with this level of precision makes the painting process that much more critical. Mike Madson, VP Golf Ball R&D notes, “If you apply the paint too thick or too thin, it's going to change the flight you expect. And even worse, if the paint is applied differently on one half of the golf ball than the other you can start to get a left and right phenomenon as much as 30 or 40 yards offline purely from the aerodynamic changes in the side-to-side forces.”
