I'm currently playing a set of TM R9 irons and am an 8 handicap.  The more I read and hear about getting fitted, the more I realize I need new irons.  The 714 AP2's are at the top of my list and the pro shop at my club just got a new demo set that I'm going to take out and play soon to see how they feel.  So my question is, if I like them, do I go get fit for a set of AP2's or do I hold out for the new 916 irons in November?

You still pretty much have a full season, yet. Will a large benefit this year outweigh an incremental benefit next year? If my set was stolen in September, I'd rent clubs and wait for the 2016s. If the house burned down today, I'd get the 2014s. Getting fit for length, lie, and a shaft tuned to your swing can have much better benefit coming from a set bought off the rack than how much better the 2016s will be over the 2014s.

Perfectly stated!  Bottom line; I will get fitted from here on out; enough said!

That's a hard one John. I can see a benefit to going either way, but one thing is for sure, see an authorized Titleist fitter for either one you decide on. If your hitting the TM's O.K. you might wait, but you can get fit for the 716's earlier than Nov. and get your order in early so you'll be one of the first to get them when they do come out in Nov. That's a good idea to demo the 916's but keep in mind that they'll be even better once you get fit.

Agree on the fitting. I had the AP1 714 and switched to 714 AP2 recently (after getting fitted). It was a great move for me. For some reason the turf interaction and weight of AP2's just fit me better. I am playing much better with them. It is hard to image they could improve on the 714 but I say that every two years and they find a way. I would say if your itching to make a switch, go for it. Titleist products hold their value very well so you could always sell up change later if you just had to have the 716's. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I think it might be worth the six month wait.  The pros will start playing them in July and you should be able to get some info on them once they start gaming them.  Read up on them and compare them to the 714's and see what improvement has been made.  I did a lot of research on all the new releases before I purchased.  Pre-order date should be early November, unless history does not repeat itself.  Do you want the latest technology and two year old technology?  The choice is yours.   Regardless of the year, Titliest irons are awesome.  Also check on line and see what used 714s are selling for and what you would get on a trade-in if you bought now and decided to get the 916s when the come out.  Research, research, research.......

  7. Alternatively, you can get fitted for 714's and wait until November and try the 716's to see if there is any difference. If not, you can purchase 714's at discounted price then since you are playing pretty well with TM's now

I can see both points of view that have been discussed above. To wait you would have the latest and greatest, but lets be honest. From a technical standpoint how much better performing does one really think the 716's will be from the 714's? If you look at comparison between the 712's and 714's its minimal at best. The biggest change will be cosmetic IMO. Iron technology has pretty much remained the same(with few exceptions)over the years so to me, if you want AP2's go ahead and get them. You still have a whole golf season ahead of you. Waiting is not going to give you revolutionary gains.

    Hi,

I tend to agree with Ed Man's comments.  I too was faced with a similar decision in late October when I decided to purchase the AP2 714 Irons.  Should I upgrade or wait until 2016 (assuming that Titleist would continue the trend of two year new releases?

After some deliberation, I decided to go ahead and get fit.

Firstly, the 714 AP2 series is a fantastic club in its own right.  One of the most beautifully designed clubs that I have ever seen in over 30+ years of golf.  It was a pure delight to swing...I loved the swing weight and the feel of the forged club on the ball was excellent.  I also liked the profile of the club - great aesthetics that gave it the blade like appearance with a bit of a "muscle back" but, also far more forgiving than the traditional forged clubs etc.

Further, when I was getting fit for them, we went through a plethora of shafts to get a good comparison of each shaft on ball flight, etc.  AND, with the options at Titleist, I was able to have my irons fitted with KBS Tour shafts that fit my swing best.

So, the way I looked at it, IMHO, is that I don't think a person would go wrong by buying the 714 AP2's now rather than wait for the presumed 716 version.  After all, the logic, if followed through to its conclusion, is:   why even purchase the 716 when the 718 will be even better (presumably).

Therefore, to me, it made more sense to purchase the 714 AP2's rather than wait.  It is a decision that I have not regretted one iota.  IMHO, again, while there may be some "technological" improvements to the 716, I cannot see it being a "huge" or "revolutionary" improvement, but rather most likely to be an "incremental" improvement.

As such, I Can see a significant improvement between your existing club and the 714 AP2's to warrant a purchase.  Besides, when we stop and think about it, the 714 AP2 was the club of choice for the 2015 Masters Champion ... (even though we all know that a "brush" is a "brush" and that it is up to the artist to use that "brush to express his/her artistry).  :-)

Regardless, wishing you well in your deliberations and don't forget, that Titleist is a very good brand that stands behind their products.

So I pulled the trigger today.  I went to Haggin Oaks here in Northern California for a fitting.  My preference going in were the AP2's but I kept an open mind and hit TM, cally, swoosh, and srxn.  None of them had the solid feel of the Titleist.  After the entire fitting, everything for me turned out to be standard.  I did end up choosing the heavier True Temper shafts.  I hit it and the Project X the same distance, but in the end, couldn't justify the extra $25/club for the Project X shafts.  My new clubs should be here the week of 6/22. Very Excited!!!!

Congratulations John! They are great clubs with terrific feel. As one equipment review stated, "good luck convincing your partners to give you any strokes with the AP2's in the bag"! :-) Would love to hear your experience when you receive them and get them out on the course!

Good for you! I think you'll be glad you pulled the trigger. I was in a similar situation two years ago with AP2 712 / 714. With the 714s coming out in Nov. 2013 I went ahead and got the 712s in May 2013. I just couldn't let a an entire golf season slip away for a new product launch. Best of luck to you and welcome to the Titleist family.

    Congrats John,

Glad to see that Haggin Oaks is still around.  Amazing,  about forty years ago when I first took up this game i was stationed at McClellan Air Plane Patch (AFB) right next door at Haggin.

Love Team Titleist and these forums, get to read about all the people and places from all over the world and I do think about all the courses near where they are at and which I played or should have played.

You'll love Titleist equipment that's all I can say.  I wish that I had the money to upgrade every time they come up with updates, you know its always going to be better, but yet you can be satisfied with what you have because the equipment is really good and can last you for a couple of upgrades for sure.

    Good Luck.

Nice!  Congrats John - they are by far, and without question, the nicest looking, sounding and performing clubs out there.  I was just fitted this week into the 714 AP2s as well and cant wait to get them into play!  Make sure you document that first hole in one with them for us too ;)

I think it will be better to wait. If you wait 6 month it'll be worth it. You can get the best technology, and if you doesn't like 716 AP2 you can always buy 714.

I am in total agreement with the new technology on the horizon.  If you do not like the 716s you can always save a few bucks on the 714s.  Always get fit for a set of clubs.  You want them tailored to your needs.  They will be out in 5 months......mid November....find all the articles you can on the new irons....research, research, research.....

for me, the bigger conflict is that Titleist is rumored to intro a series between the AP1 & AP2. waiting to find out some specs before making my fitting appointment.
  19. Does anyone know what the price of the 714's will drop to, once the 716's are released?  That could be my deciding factor......

In the past Titleist themselves do not discount the previous model clubs.  It would be at the discretion of the retailers I would assume.  Either way, you'll be gaming a phenomenal set of irons.  Good luck in the decision making process.

Can't go wrong with either. Find what suits your game and giddy up! The AP is advanced since 2008. From the buzz that's been put in my ears... the 716 will be amazing as expected. 716 seems to offer something different, so stay tuned for what Titleist will reveal!

The Titleist lines don't change that often, and the changes are usually more subtle imo.  The 714 range of clubs are all top notch, and I can't imagine there's anything about the 716 that would add significant performance to this range.  Of course, I have not seen the 716 irons so I can't tell you for sure.

Just to close the loop.  I was fitted for the clubs on a Saturday and was told they would arrive in about 10 business days.  They actually showed up the following Tuesday!  I had a company golf tournament that Saturday so I left them in the box, which was hard to do.  I unwrapped them Saturday night I played with them at my home club on Sunday.  HOLY SMOKES!!!  I have never it so many pure, dead center shots in my life!  My confidence grew with every swing of the club.  The sound of the club slicing through the turf and hitting the ball is just awesome!  I shot 83 which is about average for me, but there were a quite a few strokes left out there because I need to get use to the wedges around the greens.  I'm playing again Sunday and can't wait.  I couldn't be happier that I made the switch from TM and went with the 914's.  There will need to be a BIG difference with the 916's for me to hit it much better.

For me I would probably hold our for the 716's as it's human nature to want the latest technology and if you got 714's and saw the new ones, you would probably be kicking yourself.

Whatever you decide, do get fit for the wedges at the same time.  I ended up with Ap1 Pw and Vokey 50, 56 and 60.  That has made a huge difference as they fly 115, 100, 87 and 78 yards.  I just use the range finder and pick the club closest to the yardage and try to leave a full shot on long par 4's.  Made a big difference and I went from 9.4 to 7.0, mainly due to getting fit at Titleist and some lessons.

Their fitting is a great experience and shows where you need to improve.

    Best of luck

  28. So I just graduated highschool and am going to college to golf, and I plan to fit myself for all new Titleist clubs. So with that said, should I get the CB OR AP2's? And should I wait for the new 716's to come out or just go with the 714's? Season starts within next month.

I've played about 10 rounds with my new 714 AP2's since late June and couldn't be happier with them. It will be up to you to decide if you have to have the latest and greatest clubs or not. As far as choosing the CB's or AP2's, hit both when you get fitted and decide which feels and performs better.

    John,

I am also a new 714 AP2 owner. I got mine as a wedding gift from my wife on May 30. I only started playing golf about a year and a half ago. I started out playing with a used set of TM Burner 2.0 irons. Obviously, that's a game improvement iron so it was suitable for my level at the time. I have been working with a PGA professional since I began, and as a former baseball player, I've been able to develop a pretty solid swing these past 18 months. When I expressed interest in upgrading my irons, he suggested the AP2s. I went to his fitter and got fit for the AP2s with XP95 shafts. We've had so much rain here in the Tampa Bay area that I've only played about 3-4 rounds with them, but I've been hitting the range a lot. I love these irons. The thinner sole allows the face to cut through the turf nicely. A clean strike with a 714 AP2 is a thing of beauty. So far my lowest score is an 89, but with these clubs and the work I've been putting in, I'm hoping to card a sub 85 round by the end of the year.

The 716s look pretty sick from the shots and Iould've waited if I was in 712 / 714 time but pretty happy with my call to dive in with 714.

Will look forward to seeing Mark Crossfield and Rick Sheils having a go with them eventually :)

I could not even wait until the 716's are "officially" announced. I bought a set of 714 CBs to replace my 712 CBs due to wear. I will most likely get a set of 716s as well.....

  34. played m32s for several years but as got older loss some distance and went thru several different irons with less than ideal results then about 1 year ago our pro had set of 714 ap2s with 110gm aerotec shafts.  hit them and talked him into selling them to me next day, I've died and gone to heaven as good or better than m32s same unbelievable feel with pure shots.

Recommend seeing what your golf coach for recommendations and speak with the Titleist representative who is handling your account.  Also recommend seeing their fitter to ensure you get the correct fit.  This is a big step and you want the right clubs.

I have the 714 AP2s and they are the best feeling clubs and offer long distance and offer good forgivness and I also imagine that the 716s are going to be great too, but I would wait for the 716s to come out and then buy the 714 AP2s so they will be less expensive.

I'm looking to replace my irons this fall and plan to do a fitting at one of the courses locally which is an advanced fitting center. I've hit the 714 AP2s at a few demo days and have really liked them, but also know the 716s will be released shortly. My thought was to wait until the 716s are available at fitters, but I was wondering if once those are out, is it no longer possible to order a set of 714s or can you order either during the transition. …just in case I hit one better than the other.

    Thanks.

    Hi Jeff!

Great question... I'm sure that Cathi or one of the other TT staff people will be able to get you that answer. I suppose that the short answer depends on how much inventory that Titleist has left (of the 714's).

While I definitely prefer the aesthetic appeal of the 714 AP2's, there are others that love the visual appeal of the 716's. And, if it is anything like the 714's I'm sure that they will be a great club too!

    Jeff,

I know that at my local Golfsmith store the 712s were available for several months after the 714s came out.  I assume the same would apply with the 714s once the 716s become available to the public.

I would test the 714 AP2's and still wait for the 916's to come out and compare. The reason being, is that you do not want to by a set and regret buying them, you know? It is only a couple months away so i would suggest being patient a little longer.

I was going to wait for the 716's, but ran into too good of a deal on the 714 AP2's to pass up. They are the best feeling iron I've ever hit - the strike is almost vibration free and, I can't imagine the 716 will offer that much of a performance increase.

    John,

There have been several post that the new irons AP1s/AP2s are coming out in November.  I think the pro circuit are doing BETA testing right now.  No matter what, I think the new irons will be great.

There are pictures and some information available on some post or you can try a google "new Titleist irons" and get a quick synopsis.

Word of advice, get fitted for the new irons too.  Good Luck
